Hate to see this end. I've been a lot more mindful of plastic use. In the past my focus was on purchasing items in packaging that was recyclable. Now my focus has been how can I change what I purchase to something that doesn't contain plastics. At times I could make other choices while at other times I could not. I was shocked today when I purchased some tennis shoes and usually I would refuse bags, however the clerk made a big production about how they have stopped using plastic bags to reusable bags.

What did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?

I felt like I was doing pretty well until the recommendations. While I know I need to work on food waste I was surprised at how much of a impact it would be if I star ed composting for the garden. So it looks like that will be something that we start working on.

There is a little over a week left for this challenge! Keep it going! One way to do that, you can start using natural cleaning cloths and scrubbers instead of plastic scrubbers and synthetic sponges. Compressed natural cellulose sponges are often sold without any plastic packaging because they don't need to be kept moist; they expand when wet.

Did you know, Agaves are predominately native to the deserts of North America? they play a critically important role as nectar sources for various types of bats considered keystone species.

We are three weeks in! Almost to the finish line! Let's keep going strong all the way until the end. One of my favorite ways to reduce my plastic so far this month has been to shop at thrift stores! Buying gently-used secondhand clothing and shows is a good way to the get the styles you want without buying new plastic. You also get the fun bonus of getting to brag about how cheap something was when people compliment it :)

What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

We recycle more than we throw away. We could do better in that my husband has a tendency to throw items in the trash as he doesn't want to rinse something out. We struggle with cooking for just the two of us. While we do make frozen meals out of the majority of leftovers we could do better with our food waste. Looking into how we could start composting, just not sure how to keep all of the animal visitors out of that area.

We are officially two weeks in! How's it going? Is it easier or harder than you thought it would be?

Here is a two week fun fact for you on our team plant, Margarita! Agaves are monocarpic, meaning that an individual plant will flower once and then die afterwards. In our agave’s case, its flowering mast will rise between twenty to thirty feet, produce thousands of bright yellow flowers, and fall after a few months as the plant begins to die.

What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

Natural fibers also require less water to produce, are processed with fewer and less harmful chemicals, and are biodegradable. This combination means that using natural fibers for clothes reduces risks to both human and environmental health.Sep 24, 2022

That even the very first plastics that were created have still not degraded. They are still around and intact somewhere most likely in a landfill.

Check out this commercial that I saw earlier this week and how plastics are being made for the future.

Recycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?

Sharing this information with family and friends. We all recycle, but maybe this will help them have a visual to understand what the different numbers mean.
