It has been really fun to practice more mindfulness with my consumption of waste/plastic.

This Ecochallenge has reminded me of the reasons why I opt to choose sustainable habits over simple-minded convenience. Sometimes I need a reminder why I should go thru the trouble of purchasing whole heads of lettuce & bunches of mature greens with soil clinging to the roots & stems, instead of getting the pre-washed baby greens packed in the plastic "clamshell" boxes.

Recycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?

It is interesting that that the chasing arrow was designed by a college student for Earth Day 1970. It can be used by anyone and it is not associated with a regulation.

What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    Kathleen Hitchner's avatar
    Kathleen Hitchner 7/31/2023 4:54 PM
Purchasing fabrics made from natural fibers reduces the amount of microplastics being released into the environment from washing and even wearing/using synthetic fibers. Fabrics derived from plants rather than from fossil fuels have a smaller environmental footprint. For these and other reasons, using natural fibers is better for human health as well as the health of the planet. You can add to the positive impact by buying used or vintage from stores like Goodwill or vintage boutiques.

How do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?

It can be overwhelming, trying to make time in an already-busy schedule and dealing with health issues, to do more to prepare food. But it is rewarding knowing that it is better for the environment and healthier for me and my family.

What did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?

I learned that there are many types of plastics and that there is an industry which make plastics not only biodegradable but edible.
