How might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?

In many lower areas of income, styrofoam is way more relevant because it is the cheaper alternative, especially in the restaurants around there.

Have you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?

Today is the last day, and I thank you for allowing me to reflect, act and learn about ways in which I can live more sustainably and to take better care of our blue planet.

I really enjoyed taking this challenge with all of you! I ended up coming down with covid on Friday, so I am checking in for the last few days a bit late, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciated the camaraderie and healthy teamwork and competition

Single use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?

those weird pads in the meat packaging are gross and I have to imagine there are better options out there. I used to buy my meat at the butcher when I could, but affordability has changed with food

What did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?

My thoughts and feelings are that I cannot spend too much energy thinking about it because I can only control my own actions. I can lead by example and try to do it in such a way that others don't feel criticized so that if they choose, they can decide to make positive changes on their own and feel they have ownership of those choices

Had you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?

    Jennifer Lande's avatar
    Jennifer Lande 7/31/2023 2:20 PM
Balloons are non-necessary and it would be nice if people acted like it, but I cannot control others. I hosted a community cleanup last year and was appalled at how many balloons we found out in the woods and on the side of the road. I doubt I will ever buy a balloon for the rest of my life. Meanwhile, I know two separate women in my community who have businesses based on building those balloon arches. I want to support them and their dreams but not at that cost.

I agree. NO BALLOONS, NO BALLOONS, NO BALLOONS until people are more careful with them. Whenever I see events where balloons are released, I cringe, cry and curse.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

I am concerned about people's inability to face reality. Let's take the fact that we have been inundated with smoke and wildfires and yet people still clamor to set off fireworks every 4th of July and the like despite the thousands of fires they start, the man injuries, and the incredible harm and dangers to wildlife and pets. There are other alternatives and when you try to discuss them, people often get defensive. Let's take for example me discussing LED fireworks and my coworker telling me that "There are plenty of other countries people who don't like fireworks can move to". Mind you, I work for the department of parks and forestry...

I don't use glitter after hearing years ago that it was harmful to the environment though I do have a couple of somewhat sparkly eye shadows

Reusable options do not have to be plastic
