Thank you so much everyone for participating this year! We all did an excellent job and it's exciting to see how much our cumulative efforts have added up :)

This month was really interesting to see all the ups and downs; there were both good and bad days but it was really eye opening to see all the different changes we can truly make in our life time!

What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

By looking at my most recent recycling and trash run, my waste audit is a lot different than what it used to be. I’ve learned that I can recycle more of the items I have/ receive or buy, and a lot of my trash waste has just become food scraps and simple materials that I can’t recycle because of what is accepted. One thing I’ve pinpointed that I can reduce is the amount of plastic packaging my food comes in.

Had you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?

Ever since looking into the field of wildlife, this has been one of the main topics at the forefront of my mind. It always pains me whenever I see a loose balloon float away or a lantern show being promoted. One way I would love to promote balloon free celebrations is by making my own decision and persuading my friends to do the same.

How can having access to zero waste period products help people who menstruate overcome barriers to education or other opportunities?

By having access to these products, it will help lead to education on how to have proper hygiene during these times. It will not only help comfort those who need these items, but also help teach others.

Ending this PFJ and calling it a mixed bag of success for this year. On a last note, I am mulling over a piece of news I saw coming out of Germany. A grocery chain there picked nine items to sell for one week at prices reflective of their true ecosystem/environmental cost. In some cases, these items were 94% more expensive because they accounted for the cost of offsetting NOx, methane, and CO2. Responses from the public ranged from positive, since it spurred them to more carefully consider the impact of their purchases, to neutral, with people simply opting to wait until the week-long "promotion" to end before buying the products again. I wonder what people would say if we did something similar with regard to the cost of plastic.

Ohhhh this is interesting! Thank you for sharing - I'm going to have to look into this. I always say that sustainable products aren't too expensive; conventional products are too cheap. When we actually take into consideration the planetary costs and paying people living wages, the prices of sustainable products are just the price of doing ethical business. But when everyone is paid so little - both on the production side and the consumer side - it can definitely be a big price difference forcing people to make the unsustainable choices. Everything is so interconnected.

Last day! Upon reflecting on everything this month, I still feel that the biggest action we can all take against single use plastic is to advocate companies to own the responsibility. Major changes will only come from the producers - citizens currently have few plastic-alternative choices and that needs to change. Once plastic is created it is already a lost cause for the most part - its here to stay. We need to push companies to create more alternatives or just not use plastic packaging - through our purchasing power and by also uniting our voices by contacting companies directly. Governments and large non-profits can continue to pass bag & packaging bans so that companies are forced to reduce their plastic use. Let's push big businesses to create big changes across the globe!

In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

Got to tour my local waste place on base. They do an awful job and I have already reached out on ways to help improve.

I am very grateful for this opportunity. I try my best everyday to make some better choices for our environment because without it, we wouldn't survive. This whole month also taught me that having to be a little more focused on less plastic packaging, I am eating healthier! Extra bonus!

What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

    Maryah Boozer's avatar

I love sharing economy's! It's how it was in the old days and should continue to be. We are social creatures and it takes a village to raise each other up appropriately. =] When we have a sharing economy, I think we get back in touch with our emotional wellbeing and better appreciation for things around us.
