I definitely feel like I could have done more, but I learned a lot about the history of plastic, the difficulty of actually recycling most of it, and many ways to make small changes to my daily life that can help reduce the usage of plastics.

What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

Plastic has become unavoidable. We see it at home, we see it at work, and we see it in our cars. Unfortunately, we also see it in our streets, in our rivers, in our oceans....and while we may not see it, it is also in our air, in our food, and in our water! It may have its purpose, but it has now created serious problems for all. We need to at least reduce its use and dispose of it appropriately. I will start by reducing my use of plastic bags, and will try to eliminate plastic cutlery in its entirety.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are a healthier choice and less expensive than the prepackaged counterparts.

Had a party over the weekend and decided to keep it as free of plastic as possible. I noticed two things. One, the whole thing felt very elevated with the plastic missing! Yay! Lots of positive feedback on how nice it looked. Two, I was STUNNED when we went to take out the trash and recycling the next morning. Normally we have to plan to make sure there's enough room in the bins to handle post-party aftermath. This time, BOTH the garbage AND the recycling were almost empty!! We had 20 people over! What!

How can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?

Recycling might help reduce trash and pollution problems, but the fact is that the recycling rate in the U.S. is only about 30%. The best thing is to minimize the use of resources to begin with, this way minimizing or avoiding disruption and pollution of the environment during the extraction and manufacturing process. In an era where everything we buy seems to be shipped, it is important that packaging should be reduced to a minimum (in many cases is it is excessive). People should be aware that it is best not to create the trash. This is the message I will convey to my friends in person and on social media, and whenever possible, to those on decision-making positions by signing petitions or writing letter.

Had you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?

When I was kid we did an experiment with my elementary school that involved writing a note, sticking it inside a ballon, and releasing the balloon in hopes that it would be found and the replied to. Kind of like a message in a bottle. Even then I was like, "Isn't this just trash we're leaving, though?" I've read casually on the harmful effects in my adulthood, but I am anxious to get actual stats. Didn't do it this week as planned.

How can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself and your family? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?

I can find opportunities to reduce my carbon and plastic footprints and to replace and reuse the things I use everyday. I can research more ways to help, donate, educate others, and volunteer to make a difference in these areas.

It is going pretty well. I was excited to complete the challenge and look forward to continuing these new habits even after the challenge is over.
