Danielle's actions
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
No more paper plates!
My goal is to convince my family to only use washable plates for dinner, rather than using single use plates. It is imperative for my family to take action and make an impact with reducing the amount of plates being thrown away that are used for about 20 minutes. Small actions lead to bigger changes and a better outlook for habits within the household.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 10 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Danielle Wilson 7/30/2023 1:13 PMI always refill my travel sized containers when going on a trip. It is an easy habit that helps reduce the amount of plastic that we use. This is a great example of how a small and simple change can create mindful habits to help the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Danielle Wilson 7/30/2023 1:07 PMIt concerns me that my family does not seem to understand their impact on the environment. By educating them aboutsingle use plastics and other issues, I feel that I am able to make changes that can become habits for my family. Such examples include reducing the amount of plastic and single use items that are used within our household. While this is a small change, building new habits within my family can help bring changes to others as well as we spread awareness. That is why I feel that education is so important and necessary for all! One small step or change can lead to awareness for many. The more we educate others about these issues, the bigger change that we will start to see. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Danielle Wilson 7/29/2023 6:37 PMAs this is my first plastic free July that I have been apart of, I have never really thought about the amount of plastic that goes into producing food. This challenge has truly opened my eyes to the excessive amount of waste that we create just from plastics and packaging in the store. It has made me take another look at what I am buying and evaluate the impact that I am making on the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBeyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?
Danielle Wilson 7/11/2023 2:56 PMReusable products are much more durable and helps avoid spending extra money on products that would otherwise be thrown away.
