Kristen's actions
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 5 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Family + Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 30 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 30 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 20 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.

Kristen Werling 8/01/2023 8:41 AMI definitely set the bar high for myself (this was my first year doing the Ecochallenge) and I was disappointed I didn't manage to get all of the one-time actions I chose done. I do feel like I learned a lot and made some good habits, especially when it comes to the daily actions I am the worst at. I am committed now to having extra reusable grocery bags and food storage items in my car so that if I go out to eat or go grocery shopping, I won't need to use plastic shopping bags or take out containers. I loved seeing this month how the team's small changes can really add up, so that helps me feel like my small actions matter and can make a difference. Great job, everyone! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Kristen Werling 7/29/2023 5:32 PMI made a new multipurpose cleaner today and I was surprised at how much I like it and how easy it was to make. I already make my own soaps and lotions, but being able to make household cleaners was a bigger step for me. I'm happy to be using less plastic this way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Kristen Werling 7/28/2023 8:58 AMI guess I never really knew how plastic was made before this, or at least did not realize the extent to which it comes from fossil fuels. I think the problem is more than just plastic production - I think we need to stop producing fossil fuels so that the material to make plastics is harder to come by. Climate change is insane right now (today it's 94 degrees and thunderstorms = gross) so fossil fuels and plastics really need to become a thing of the past. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsIn what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?
Kristen Werling 7/28/2023 8:50 AMI have been making my own pet toys out of toilet paper tubes, hemp rope, deer antlers, hay, pinecones, sticks, pine needles, and anything else I can find outside. I feel like they are safer for my pets because they are natural and I like that I'm not contributing to the plastics problem. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Kristen Werling 7/28/2023 8:47 AMI have been getting a lot of my pet bowls as donations or from thrift stores and while things don't match and sometimes they have chips that make them less pretty, it helps me feel better to know that I'm helping the earth instead of hurting it by causing new things to be produced. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow can you and your little one exercise your creativity without creating more plastic waste?
Kristen Werling 7/28/2023 8:45 AMThe invention of EcoGlitter has been really cool - I can use it in place of real glitter to get the same effect without the guilt. I love that products that are more sustainable are starting to take off so we can make those better choices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Kristen Werling 7/28/2023 8:43 AMMost of the waste I generate is from food take out containers because I rarely eat everything when I go out to eat. I'm going to start planning ahead and keeping extra tupperware in my car so that the next time I go out to eat, I can put my leftovers into my own container. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Kristen Werling 7/28/2023 8:39 AMI had no idea that the history of plastic started as a way to replace the use of ivory from elephant tusks. I think it had an admirable start but has taken off in terrible ways so that now we can't live without plastics. I feel like there are so many plastic items I absolutely need like trash bags and I can't even think of another option for using them. I hate that we are all so reliant on plastic and that companies have done such a good job of selling them to us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Kristen Werling 7/14/2023 7:39 AMWhile the numbers do help you know what material an item is made of, it doesn't necessarily mean that item is recyclable. It's important to know what numbers you local recycle company takes so you know what you can even put in your bin. -
Kristen Werling 7/12/2023 8:42 AMI really liked the Chasing Arrows video because it talked about how even when we think we're doing the right thing and recycling things that have the symbol and the correct number, it may not actually be recyclable. It's crazy to me how unless you work for a recycling plant, you really can't know if something is recyclable or not (the labels don't really mean anything). We need industry change and to stop using plastics (or use better types of plastics). The video made me feel a bit better about my recycling efforts (it's not my fault I don't know what can be recycled when companies aren't regulated about what they put on their packaging) but I wish there was more I could do. I just wish the video had a better way that I personally can help facilitate these changes that need to happen at the industry or government level.
