Tristin's actions
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 15 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Tristin Ware 7/31/2023 7:28 AMKnowing that there are other people that want to make the community a better place gives me hope. I really enjoy when my kids make an effort to pick something up or fish a plastic bag out of the water! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Tristin Ware 7/31/2023 7:27 AMI like making my own products because I know what goes into each thing and I can make larger quantities for less money. Vinegar is a great cleaning agent. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Tristin Ware 7/31/2023 7:24 AMThis has not been easy especially with kids and their "wants". I notice that often times the healthier foods do not go on sale so I look for what is in season. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Tristin Ware 7/31/2023 7:23 AMI think about whether or not I need to buy something first. I also look for something that I can buy in bulk rather than individually wrapped. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Tristin Ware 7/29/2023 1:14 PMI love going to art shows. There is a local artist who is very talented and up-cycles to create amazing wearable art. I will share by wearing her art! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Tristin Ware 7/28/2023 9:31 AMAs clothes wear down and are washed at least natural fibers are wearing off verse synthetic. This hopefully leads to less micro-plastics! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Tristin Ware 7/28/2023 9:28 AMI have two school aged kids and it is very easy for them to pick processed snacks. I have started having them participate more in packing their lunches and I always ask them what healthy option are you having! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Tristin Ware 7/25/2023 11:54 AMYes, I have considered the environmental impact of balloons. Having kids it is hard to turn them down especially at big celebrations but I have been working on finding alternatives like paper decorations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Tristin Ware 7/25/2023 9:53 AMI find going to the grocery store more difficult each time. The more I go the more I notice how much packaging goes into each item. I have been good about asking the baggers to not use more plastic to wrap items, however I find it difficult to find any items at the store that don't have some plastic!-
Susan Carmack 7/27/2023 5:09 AMI agree, it’s such a challenge! Especially things like hand soap, dish Soap, and laundry detergent. Although, I have started using laundry sheets with no plastic packaging and I love them!
