Karolyn's actions
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 10 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Karolyn Walker 7/04/2023 10:35 AMThe amount of single-use plastics seems to be ever-changing. A pasta shell brand with a plastic window removed the window, and now months later, they went from a cardboard box without a window to now being sold in a plastic bag. Now I need to buy my pasta shells at Walmart; they package their brand in a cardboard box with no plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Karolyn Walker 7/04/2023 10:22 AMPicking up litter shows pride in where you live and makes it a better place for people and the wildlife. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?

Karolyn Walker 7/03/2023 8:07 AMI had to stop by a gas station for a drink.....I took a moment to consider my options and I chose a can instead of a bottle. Sounds like an obvious choice but I still have to stop and think about my choices. I even said no to a freshly baked brownie because it was wrapped in plastic wrap. Small changes can make a difference.-
