Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Family + Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Bathroom
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 50 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 10 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Family + Pets
DIY Cat Litter
I will swap out my cat's litter for sawdust, mulch, or dirt with baking soda.
Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 30 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 30 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBeyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?
April VanZant 7/13/2023 1:30 PMPacking my own lunch allows me to save money each week that can go towards things like bills, gas, or bowling for rhinos :) It also keeps more trash from going into the landfills. It’s definitely a win win either way! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
April VanZant 7/13/2023 1:28 PMI often make my own drinks before leaving home. A lot of stores are slowly letting you bring your own cups for refills, which is nice. During COVID, I started making drinks at home in reusable containers so that I could refill my cup and the habit still sticks with me. I will also fill my cup with ice water at work so that I don’t have to use a plastic water bottle and add more plastic or trash to the already full landfills. -

April VanZant 7/08/2023 7:37 PMI’ve started a compost pile with more than just poo, I constantly fill water bottles so I’m not using plastic. I’ve even found ways to use the plastic bottles and milk jugs I have and turn them into mini green houses for all my seedlings and plants, according to what I’ve researched they can even continue to grow in colder temps. I’ve also harvested seeds from fruits and veggies we eat regularly. Slowly creating a self sustaining homestead. -
April VanZant 7/06/2023 10:40 AMMy plastic free eco challenge is goong pretty good, I’ve been so tired a couple days I forgot to log on and complete/ report my progress. I’m going to set an alarm every night to remind me to turn it in but I guess missing two days so far isn’t too bad. I’ve also realized just how much plastic is used in restaurants, stores, & gas stations. It has definitely opened my eyes to just how much plastic or styrofoam products are out there.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
April VanZant 7/06/2023 10:36 AMPicking up litter helps keep the community clean and looks better overall. If you just leave trash on the ground it can harm the animals and people living in the community. It also gives the perception of a poor/ trashy community. Picking up trash if a good way to keep everything beautiful and make people want to come back. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
April VanZant 7/06/2023 10:35 AMOne bar of soap or shampoo typically lasts longer that the bottles. I think a lot of it is because it’s more compact. If you leave a bar of soap or bar shampoo where water can drip down on it, it won’t last as long but it will still last longer than these big plastic bottles. I recently purchased bar shampoo and conditioner and I can’t wait to see the results( I am impatiently waiting for it to be delivered). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
April VanZant 7/06/2023 10:31 AMDisposable razors don’t last long at all. I’m sure it was that way purposely by using blades that full or rust quicker so that you have to buy more product. I’m glad there are more companies making razors that last longer and aren’t disposable. In the stores I’ve seen a lot more long lasting razors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenTake time to reflect or meditate over your plastic-free cup of tea. Share your thoughts and reflections with us here!
April VanZant 7/04/2023 7:14 AMI’ve been trying to think of ways to replace products I use now with something more sustainable and also inexpensive. This is a few things I’ve come up with so far. Making my own dryer sheets with microfiber rags a little fabric softener and a jar. Making my own toothpaste out of coconut oil, baking soda and a little peppermint extract. I’ve made my own all purpose cleaner with orange peels and vinegar ( the down side is each batch takes a week but it smells amazing). I’m up for any suggestions :)
