Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Study

Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.

Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 5 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.

Felicia Mapa 7/31/2023 1:44 PMThe month flew by! I am glad to continue to implement the changes I learned on this years challenge -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Felicia Mapa 7/31/2023 1:43 PMI was surprised and worried about my eco footprint. It surprised me how much my food choices have impact but also am proud of my transportation footprint since I drive a fully electric car and often carpool. I think food waste and food packaging changed I introduced this month will help -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Felicia Mapa 7/31/2023 1:35 PMI learned that so many products that I regularly purchase create so much waste. From food products to household items, to hobby items, they create so much waste. Being more conscious and buying less or refilling household products or using reusable storage has helped reduce waste -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Felicia Mapa 7/31/2023 1:33 PMThe benefits to people animals and environment of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers is that personally for me, I have eczema and sensitive skin so natural fibers do not irritate my skin. When washing clothes without microplastics, then those plastics dont end up in the option or being ingested by animals -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Felicia Mapa 7/31/2023 1:31 PMThere are many ways to express personality, creativity, and values that don't require fast fashion is to only purchase clothing from sustainable companies or only investing in a capsule wardrobe that can be style multiple ways. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
Felicia Mapa 7/31/2023 1:29 PMA single use plastic off the top of my head that could be harmful are single use menstrual products such as tampons -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Felicia Mapa 7/31/2023 1:28 PMHealth and safety in my everyday life and in general the health of our environment and planet as a whole have increased but have a greater impact, and a positive one versus a negative one when making wasteful purchases -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Felicia Mapa 7/31/2023 1:27 PMStyrofoam and plastic pollution are definitely environmental justice issues. Statistically, people of color suffer as a result of plastic production and disposal more than others. -
