Tom's actions
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 10 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 5 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Bathroom
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Tom Tran 7/31/2023 1:59 PMOverall, I was surprised of the different plastic identification numbers. I learned, wrongly, some time ago that any plastic with the recycling symbol can be recycled. Further, I was shocked of the large batches of recyclables are discarded because they can be contaminated! In the future, I plan on paying closer attention to the types of plastics I buy if it can't be avoided and how best to recycle them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Tom Tran 7/31/2023 1:56 PMThere are many ways to express oneself rather than relying on external appearances. The foci of my identity has never been external so my fashion sense hasn't changed for the better part of a decade. I buy Hawaiian shirts that I wear for the better part of a decade since Hawaiian shirts are not subjugated to fast fashion. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Tom Tran 7/31/2023 1:48 PMIt was shocking to discover how many single use plastics we had in our pantry. Pasta packages, for example, have those little plastic windows placed in the cardboard box that was challenging to avoid at the grocery store. If manufacturers were more willing to commit to friendlier plastic free packaging, it would probably make a serious difference in the amount of plastics that end up in landfill. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Tom Tran 7/10/2023 4:36 PMI find it extremely beneficial to refilling travel sized containers when my wife and I go abroad. Not only do we have the comfort of using products that we're accustomed to at home, we're assured that we don't waste any of the little hotel products that seem very wasteful. On longer trips, we'll bring our normal sized refillable containers since the small travel containers don't last the duration of the trip anyways. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Tom Tran 7/07/2023 3:48 PM-
Krystina Jarvis 7/07/2023 4:38 PMDefinitely never too old for Star Wars utensils! My straw carrying pouch is also Star Wars themed :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Tom Tran 7/05/2023 9:20 PMThere is definitely no need for disposable razors! All the wasted plastic on the disposables when the steel razors have have the same performance. It seems like the disposable razors are marketed as convenient and more effective at getting a better shave.-
Rebecca Wilson 7/06/2023 2:24 PMHi Tom, I couldn't agree more regarding the marketing ploy of disposable razors as better and more convenient. I do think they've made some progress on reducing the amount of plastic as they now sell replacement razor heads, but ideally we would ditch disposable razors all together!
