  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family + Pets
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

The lack of natural green spaces is very concerning. Having areas preserved both for recreation and wildlife is so important.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Bailey Thomas's avatar
    Bailey Thomas 7/31/2023 12:48 PM
By visiting thrift shops more often I can cut down on the impact of fast fashion. Plus, it will help me save money in the long run too!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
What did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

    Bailey Thomas's avatar
    Bailey Thomas 7/29/2023 7:27 AM
I feel so bamboozled by the greenwashing of bioplastics. I purchased some last year for a party because I thought they would be better than traditional plastic utensils. I suppose they are better than using fossil fuels to produce plastic products but not by much... I have reached out to a local composting facility to see if they are accepted but I am still waiting to hear back. I think I might try purchasing silverware cheap from a thrift store and keeping them for when we have parties.

    Hello Black Footed Ferret Team!

I hope you all are learning as much as I am about how to live more sustainably. I thought I had a good grasp on what my impact was, but I have learned that so many more of my choices influence plastic waste.

Here are a few links to products I have begun using that have helped me reduce my plastic with little or no changes to my lifestyle:
Does anyone else have any great product recommendations?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom
The simple act of hang drying your laundry can be an act of mindfulness. Where else in your daily routine can you make mindfulness a practice?

    Bailey Thomas's avatar
    Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 10:11 AM
Ordering items off Amazon is something I need to be more aware of. If I do less frequent orders, it will reduce the energy needed to ship and will be delivered with less packaging.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family + Pets
Had you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?

    Bailey Thomas's avatar
    Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 9:16 AM
I have always been against balloon releases due to the animal consumption and direct impacts like that. However, the fact that it takes such a long time to break down is very concerning as well. It is an easy way to cut cost on a party as well!

It's hard for me to understand why so many people still do balloon releases. I can comprehend the symbolic value of seeing an object rise, but there are so many planet-friendly alternatives available. Many are even less expensive than balloon releases.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    Bailey Thomas's avatar
    Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 9:13 AM
I find refilling mini containers more efficient for me. Since I go out of town frequently, I have a travel toiletry bag that lives under by bathroom sink, and it makes for an easy packing routine to prevents me from forgetting something.

Same here. Its a practice my family has done all our lives due to the amount of travel of a military family.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
Disposable tampons and menstrual pads are often quite expensive. What are the economic and personal benefits of this switch for you?

    Bailey Thomas's avatar
    Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 9:11 AM
This has been a huge difference. I was a tampon user before and my flow can be unpredictable and change quickly so switching to a menstrual cup has been not only cheaper but far more comfortable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

    Bailey Thomas's avatar
    Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 9:09 AM
I have seen no difference in brushing, and I actually find I have replaced my toothbrush more often because I don't feel guilty about throwing away the plastic toothbrush.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom
Which microfiber solution did you choose? How has it changed your laundry routine?

    Bailey Thomas's avatar
    Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 9:08 AM
Having a newer HE washer and dryer it came with a link/microfiber filter so there was no change needed in my routine at all!
