Bailey's actions
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Bathroom
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Community
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 30 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 60 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Community
Recruiting People to PFJ
I will recruit at least 5 people in my life to participate in PFJ and talk to them about their findings.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 5 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Bailey Thomas 7/31/2023 12:51 PMThe lack of natural green spaces is very concerning. Having areas preserved both for recreation and wildlife is so important. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Bailey Thomas 7/31/2023 12:48 PMBy visiting thrift shops more often I can cut down on the impact of fast fashion. Plus, it will help me save money in the long run too! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Bailey Thomas 7/29/2023 7:27 AMI feel so bamboozled by the greenwashing of bioplastics. I purchased some last year for a party because I thought they would be better than traditional plastic utensils. I suppose they are better than using fossil fuels to produce plastic products but not by much... I have reached out to a local composting facility to see if they are accepted but I am still waiting to hear back. I think I might try purchasing silverware cheap from a thrift store and keeping them for when we have parties. -
Bailey Thomas 7/19/2023 2:42 PMHello Black Footed Ferret Team!
I hope you all are learning as much as I am about how to live more sustainably. I thought I had a good grasp on what my impact was, but I have learned that so many more of my choices influence plastic waste.
Here are a few links to products I have begun using that have helped me reduce my plastic with little or no changes to my lifestyle:- Glass Meal Prep Containers (Great for storing leftovers!)
- Laundy Detergent Sheets
- Dryer Balls
- Bamboo Dental Floss
- Bamboo Toothbrush
- Shaving Soap Bar (Better than any other shave gel I have tried!)
Does anyone else have any great product recommendations?-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomThe simple act of hang drying your laundry can be an act of mindfulness. Where else in your daily routine can you make mindfulness a practice?
Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 10:11 AMOrdering items off Amazon is something I need to be more aware of. If I do less frequent orders, it will reduce the energy needed to ship and will be delivered with less packaging.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 9:16 AMI have always been against balloon releases due to the animal consumption and direct impacts like that. However, the fact that it takes such a long time to break down is very concerning as well. It is an easy way to cut cost on a party as well!-
Joshua Richards 7/26/2023 2:19 PM -
Mary Hanks 7/15/2023 9:19 AMIt's hard for me to understand why so many people still do balloon releases. I can comprehend the symbolic value of seeing an object rise, but there are so many planet-friendly alternatives available. Many are even less expensive than balloon releases.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 9:13 AMI find refilling mini containers more efficient for me. Since I go out of town frequently, I have a travel toiletry bag that lives under by bathroom sink, and it makes for an easy packing routine to prevents me from forgetting something.-
Joshua Richards 7/26/2023 2:20 PMSame here. Its a practice my family has done all our lives due to the amount of travel of a military family.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomDisposable tampons and menstrual pads are often quite expensive. What are the economic and personal benefits of this switch for you?
Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 9:11 AMThis has been a huge difference. I was a tampon user before and my flow can be unpredictable and change quickly so switching to a menstrual cup has been not only cheaper but far more comfortable.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Bailey Thomas 7/15/2023 9:09 AMI have seen no difference in brushing, and I actually find I have replaced my toothbrush more often because I don't feel guilty about throwing away the plastic toothbrush.-
