How do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?

One thing I make often and use regularly is pickled red onions, I add them to all sorts of things from sandwiches to salads and find them to be very versatile. Below is the recipe I use!

    Ingredients
    Makes about ½ cup
    ½ cup apple cider vinegar
    1 Tbsp. sugar
    1½ tsp. kosher salt
    1red onion, thinly sliced
    Preparation
Whisk first 3 ingredients and 1 cup water in a small bowl until sugar and salt dissolve. Place onion in a jar; pour vinegar mixture over. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour.

Do Ahead: Can be made 2 weeks ahead. Cover and chill. Drain onions before using

I use waste not want not groups when I am looking for household items, my friends and I also swap clothes, books and beauty products. Both of these are cost effective but also help me reduce my purchasing of new items.
