  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 9:59 PM
I have started collecting any bottles or jars to be reused to be travel friendly. I recently switched out my liquid body wash for a bar of soap, and it has revealed to me how much less space it takes. I will continue to bring my bar soaps and fill up jars/bottles I have with shampoo and conditioner to avoid having to buy any more. I think I will keep doing this from here on.

How has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?

    Rowena Sy's avatar
    Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 9:48 PM
I never thought to look into the history of plastic and am surprised by how rapidly it was produced and how much it has been introduced in our day to day life. From aiming to replace billard balls to being used in fabrics for clothing... it has really taken over. The fabricated demand and marketing behind single use plastic items, such as bottle water has damaging effects on our environment and society. Learning about the history of single-use plastic is going to make me think twice before purchasing, or to find alternatives.

    Study
What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

    Rowena Sy's avatar
    Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 9:34 PM
The waste audit has shown that I need to better plan what I buy. Mostly of what I've thrown out are leftover breads, herbs and ready made sauces that have a short shelf life. In order for me to reduce my waste, I think I can work on scheduling meals and purchasing ingredients that could be used across multiple meals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
Recycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?

    Rowena Sy's avatar
    Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 9:25 PM
Arrow symbol = technically can be recycled somewhere. Numbers 1 - 7 describe the type of plastic. 1-2 plastics are the most recyclable. Recycling should be a last resort, we should firstly reduce and reuse before recycling! EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW.

What did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?

    Rowena Sy's avatar
    Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 9:15 PM
Learning about environmental justice has really been eye opening to me and really connects the dots for me regarding certain issues pertained to wealth and race. It is quite upsetting that we are far from reaching environmental equality for everyone as there are so many social issues that affect this. Intervention by the government can help drastically.

Were you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?

    Rowena Sy's avatar
    Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 9:00 PM
I was very surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean. I have always been a wishcycler, not knowing fully where everything goes. Now I understand why plastic bags simply can't be put into the recycling bin, or why not everything we see in grocery shops are packaged in 100% recycled plastics.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
How does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?

    Rowena Sy's avatar
    Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 8:32 PM
Swapping out prepackaged snacks to fresh fruit and veggies not only helps the environment but is more nutritional for myself and my family. It also highlights how much we lean towards snacking too, but am hoping swapping out for fresh fruit/veg will long term decrease the amount of snacking we do.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Rowena Sy's avatar
    Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 8:30 PM
I have found it to be extremely difficult to avoid single use plastic from my usual grocery shop. Meats and fresh produce are often using plastic... including rubber bands and plastic packaging. I would love to see alternative ways for things to be packaged, it's excessive to have for example plastic boxes for cherry tomatoes... or only providing plastic bags for say green beans. I hope over time this will change!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
What did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?

    Rowena Sy's avatar
    Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 5:12 PM
It seems that plastic is in daily rotation to our lives, and is particularly harmful during the manufacturing process and through consumption. It is quite horrifying the effects it can have to a person - from cancer to developmental toxity. It affects the community as a whole because plastic is so normalised in our day to day, it can be quite hard to avoid it! Harmful to animals and the ecosystem due to wastage and deposit of by-products into the environment. It is time we break free from plastic!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    Rowena Sy's avatar
    Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 4:39 PM
Converting to natural fibres means investing in longevity and benefits not only yourself but animals and the environment too. Having quite sensitive skin, I have noticed that converting to natural fibres has had a significant improvement. The only natural fibre that makes me feel slightly uncomfortable is silk because of the process involved. But wool is a great ethical option. Natural fibres benefit the environment as it has a lower footprint. Beneficial for all!
