Mackenzie's actions
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 30 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 30 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 30 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Mackenzie Smith 7/31/2023 5:01 AMI've used this eco footprint calculator before. I got just about the same result as I did a few years ago: 3.5 earths. It's seems that despite adjusting what habits I could to decrease my footprint (like meat consumption), there are certain ones I've had to increase (like distance traveled in a week to commute to work). Looks like I need to get an EV! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Mackenzie Smith 7/31/2023 4:49 AMI didn't realize that the "compostable plastics" are only compostable at industrial facilities, and even then, only some of them! I may have to go digging through my family's compost pile at some point soon to pull out all those "compostable" forks and knives that I convinced my mom to splurge on because they were "better for the environment"! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?
Mackenzie Smith 7/11/2023 8:10 AMWe sometimes give my pup Finley the stems of the broccoli we are cutting up for dinner. We used to throw them out, but lately I've been tossing them to our little begger and he's been happy to assist. He loves the crunch and they're good for him, especially since we just learned he's 12 pounds overweight and needs to go on a lower calorie diet!-
Victoria Vella 7/11/2023 10:38 AMlove this! my pup won't eat anything green! he loves blueberries, apple skins and strawberries. Anytime I take out a knife and cutting board he sits right next to me, waiting patiently.
