Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 30 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.

Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Abby Shultz 7/26/2023 2:35 PMI have noticed in recent years that plastic straws are becoming less and less frequently offered at restaurants. Paper and recyclable straws are now becoming a more acceptable alternative for people when they go out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?
Abby Shultz 7/25/2023 8:56 AMMy cat is part of our family, and by caring for the environment by being more eco-friendly, I am creating a chance for my cat to live longer in a better world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Abby Shultz 7/25/2023 8:55 AMBy reusing bars of soap and old travel containers, it is so much cheaper than buying new items every time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Abby Shultz 7/17/2023 3:15 PMInstead of buying fast fashion, I can shop at thrift stores and second-hand clothing stores. That way, I am not adding to the amount of clothes, only reusing/rewearing clothes that have already been made and worn. I can find items that are creative and trendy, or mix and match clothes to show my personality.-
Abby Shultz 7/17/2023 3:18 PMSome examples in the Charleston area are Plato's Closet, Ash & T's (formal gowns), Style Encore, and a local Goodwill.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Abby Shultz 7/16/2023 5:28 PMI have become more aware of the prevalence of plastic in our day-to-day lives. It is crazy how integrated single-use plastics have become into our society, without even thinking about it. There are so many other options in place of plastics we could use, such as reusable water bottles, Tupperware, etc. Unfortunately, many plastic products at stores are unavoidable, so hopefully with more awareness about the issues plastics cause in our environment, big corporations and companies will start to look for more eco-friendly options. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Abby Shultz 7/14/2023 11:21 AMIt's great to get out and do litter sweeps around the Charleston area because there is always so much trash and plastic to pick up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Abby Shultz 7/13/2023 5:33 PMMy family and I watched an episode of Our Planet. We watched an episode surrounding "Frozen Worlds" and polar climates. I learned about polar bears in the Arctic and how they rely on sea ice. Because of anthropogenic global warming, sea ice is melting and polar bears are becoming more and more in danger of dying off. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Abby Shultz 7/13/2023 4:51 PMI learned that if everyone lived like me, we would need 4.1 Earths. Currently, most of my consumption comes from transportation because I am driving a lot this summer for my internship and part-time job. To reduce my footprint, I can decrease my usage of electricity at home and decrease my consumption of packaged foods to compensate for my traveling. -
Abby Shultz 7/13/2023 4:44 PMWhile calculating my ecological footprint, it was shocking to realize how much more I could be doing to lessen my impact. I need to make a better effort to use less electricity and gas throughout the week.
