  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
Recycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?

I learned that even if something has the recycling symbol, it doesn't always mean it can be recycled.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?

I learned that "products labeled “compostable” or “biodegradable” are not allowed in compost in Portland: They don’t always break down in the compost, don’t add nutrient value, and often lead to more plastics of all types contaminating the compost and the farms and gardens where the compost is used."

"Almost half of the food in the U.S. goes to waste—nearly 3,000 pounds per second"

I had a great conversation about bioplastics with my mom!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What was your strategy in talking with your favorite restaurant's management? Did you find it to be effective?

    Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 4:24 PM
I learned that "More than 561 billion individual plastic utensils are used by Americans every year." Let's try to reduce this number by using reusable cutlery.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    Yasmine Semeniuk's avatar
    Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 12:40 PM
By using bar soap instead of travel sized body wash we can reduce plastic one vacation at a time!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?

    Yasmine Semeniuk's avatar
    Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 12:38 PM
I learned that "Environmental Justice is a new term that simply means making sure that everyone has a fair chance of living the healthiest life possible." When reading the articles I was reminded of the countless environmental justice issues Canada's Indigenous populations suffer from. For example, the "Amjiwnaang First Nation of Ontario is surrounded by over 50 industrial plants within a 25 km radius of its territory." These plants seep toxins into the earth which results in a significantly higher cancer cases in the area, amongst many other health related issues.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
Single use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?

    Yasmine Semeniuk's avatar
    Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 12:21 PM
I will continue to explore plastic free stores in my neighbourhood! Although they tend to be more expensive--its worth it!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

    Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 11:16 AM
I wonder what changes can be achieved if society puts pressure on grocery stores to reduce their plastic use! It's scary to see so many fruits and veggies in plastic bags and containers!

Did you know that "Americans throw away enough office paper each year to build a 12 foot high wall from Seattle to NY (a new wall every year)!" I can only image what the world impact is!
