I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 5 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 5 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 7 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 3 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 5 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 5 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Community
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 5 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyRecycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?
Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 5:29 PMI learned that even if something has the recycling symbol, it doesn't always mean it can be recycled.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?
Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 5:28 PMI learned that "products labeled “compostable” or “biodegradable” are not allowed in compost in Portland: They don’t always break down in the compost, don’t add nutrient value, and often lead to more plastics of all types contaminating the compost and the farms and gardens where the compost is used." -
Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 5:06 PM"Almost half of the food in the U.S. goes to waste—nearly 3,000 pounds per second" -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat was your strategy in talking with your favorite restaurant's management? Did you find it to be effective?
Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 4:24 PMI learned that "More than 561 billion individual plastic utensils are used by Americans every year." Let's try to reduce this number by using reusable cutlery. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 12:40 PMBy using bar soap instead of travel sized body wash we can reduce plastic one vacation at a time! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 12:38 PMI learned that "Environmental Justice is a new term that simply means making sure that everyone has a fair chance of living the healthiest life possible." When reading the articles I was reminded of the countless environmental justice issues Canada's Indigenous populations suffer from. For example, the "Amjiwnaang First Nation of Ontario is surrounded by over 50 industrial plants within a 25 km radius of its territory." These plants seep toxins into the earth which results in a significantly higher cancer cases in the area, amongst many other health related issues. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunitySingle use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?
Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 12:21 PMI will continue to explore plastic free stores in my neighbourhood! Although they tend to be more expensive--its worth it! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 11:16 AMI wonder what changes can be achieved if society puts pressure on grocery stores to reduce their plastic use! It's scary to see so many fruits and veggies in plastic bags and containers! -
Yasmine Semeniuk 7/14/2023 11:11 AMDid you know that "Americans throw away enough office paper each year to build a 12 foot high wall from Seattle to NY (a new wall every year)!" I can only image what the world impact is!
