Geraldine's actions
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 5 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.

Geraldine Schlenoff 7/22/2023 3:16 AMTrying to get away from all those plastic bottles. Laundry detergent is now pods or laundry sheets. In the shower, trying bar soap for shampoo. Already using bar soap for washing. But I have a recycling bag in my bathroom and am always surprised how much there is to recycle in the bathroom: medicine bottles, toilet paper rolls, moisturizer containers, toothbrushes, etc.-
Camryn Martin 7/22/2023 6:31 AMI feel your pain. While there are many plastic-free alternatives out there, so many things still aren't available pf, especially in the bathroom.

Geraldine Schlenoff 6/19/2023 3:41 AMWhen in Ocean City Md on vacation, I will carry my recyclables back home as Ocean City does not have a recycling collection from homes. Each year I write to the members of the council, asking to reinstate the neighborhood recycling. They send their trash to PA to all be burned.-

Patricia Jonas 6/24/2023 6:38 PMInteresting that in some countries (with some high end resorts) they have established visitor policies where visitors are asked to sign a pledge to be ecologically and culturally responsible during their trip (New Zealand, Bali, Palau) and some resorts are doing cutting-edge research of coral restoration. It might take more time and more demands by visitors for Ocean City to enact more sustainable policies.
