Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.

Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Beth Schaefer 7/28/2023 1:50 PMThere is not a single community or place on the globe that is not impacted by plastic. Manufacturing, disposal and waste all directly affect my own community. Young people searching for career direction could really help our ailing panet by choosing fields that can impact the production and disposal of plastics and the harm these industries cause. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?
Beth Schaefer 7/28/2023 12:26 PMPeople need to take a big picture view of their role in the environment. This includes our pets that would not be interacting with natural areas if not for our actions. Clean up after your pet...there is no "poop fairy"!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Beth Schaefer 7/21/2023 1:41 PMIt is astounding to see things like fruite or vegetables wrapped in plastic. Why would a company waste the time , resources & energy on this?? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Beth Schaefer 7/21/2023 1:40 PMIt doesn't take long to form a habit. It is easy to wash re-useable containers instead of feeling guilty for throwing out a plastic bag, even if you have washed & re-used it many times. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBeyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?
Beth Schaefer 7/21/2023 1:38 PMYou can have "favorite" containers..put stickers on them! Makes me smile! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Beth Schaefer 7/21/2023 1:36 PMSo easy to have reuseable containers at home to pack your lunch in. And it is easy to find glass or aluminium containers instead of plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Beth Schaefer 7/21/2023 1:32 PMwhen we have team meetings I always get out utensils that have been washed & re-used. Lead by example! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
