Kristin's actions
Family + Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 2 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 30 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 120 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Community
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 15 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Kristin Ruth 7/25/2023 8:12 AMHeadwaters is a dedicated group of environmentalists in my community. They educate the very young to the very old on how to reduce, reuse and enjoy nature (while I add the recycle component to the lessons..). This small group of people have impacted many individuals. Without social media, the general public wouldn't be aware of the work Headwaters does for our community, or of the events that occurs in our community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Kristin Ruth 7/25/2023 8:08 AMShopping at Sam's club for groceries was expensive at first. However, in the long run we save money. We only purchase snacks in big bags and reuse glass or old plastic food containers for lunches. It is a shame to see so much food being offered in multi packaging. The cost for these items is higher too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBeyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?
Kristin Ruth 7/25/2023 8:05 AMI carry a stainless steel utensil set with me when I travel. I also keep a set in my desk at work. I no longer need a plastic fork to eat my salad and I have stopped using straws. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Kristin Ruth 7/21/2023 6:12 AMWorking with others to clean up the community makes me feel appreciated, valued, and a part of the solution to clean up pollution. Our efforts contribute to keeping our community free from litter and visually beautiful, which contributes to a sense of peace, happiness, and community pride. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Kristin Ruth 7/21/2023 6:09 AMI attended a webinar to verify my verbiage to my community in regards to how and why items are recyclable in my area of residence. The most difficult part of recycling is the differences that exist in recycling between counties. Who is hauling it out and where does it go are important questions to address in understanding why we recycle what we recycle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsWe know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!
Kristin Ruth 7/21/2023 6:05 AMMy dog sheds like a banshee! The rubber glove idea works super well. I got my sister and other family members reusable gloves to use with their pets. It works! -
Kristin Ruth 7/17/2023 6:49 AMIts tough not to use plastics. So much food is stored in them in stores! Finding solutions in a small rural town is, at times, next to impossible! I believe in supporting community stores. The next solution is "no plastics" to buy on line.... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Kristin Ruth 7/17/2023 6:46 AMIt takes a community to make a difference in the amount of trash that ends up in the landfill. Recycling helps to reduce that amount - keeping nature preserves untouched. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHave you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?
Kristin Ruth 7/17/2023 6:43 AMFamily sees the shrinkage of trash. We don't take out the garabe as often as we used to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?
Kristin Ruth 7/11/2023 4:54 AMCaring for the environment has to be a way of life - just like religion.
