Tessa's actions
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 15 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 10 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Tessa Robinson 7/30/2023 5:10 PMOur plastic consumption and our general overconsumption of material goods like clothes and electronics. Also the use of fossil fuels as an energy source -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Tessa Robinson 7/30/2023 5:08 PMThe waste I can reduce the most is plastic packaging bought from supermarkets. I just wish it was easier to buy food in stores that doesn't have plastic wrapping but I could make a greater effort to go to stores where you can use your own reusable containers to top up -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Tessa Robinson 7/30/2023 5:05 PMThe benefits are so huge and it's so easy to switch to bamboo - there's literally no reason to use a plastic brush-

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Tessa Robinson 7/30/2023 4:59 PMThere aren't any landfill sites close to where I live. There is a recycling facility close to me which is interesting to know. The landfill sites tend to be further out of the city in lower income areas, affecting those living there unfortunately-
Rowena Sy 7/30/2023 5:01 PMWould be good to check out your local council too - sometimes they organise e-waste collection days!

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Tessa Robinson 7/30/2023 4:51 PMI was very surprised about the different plastic numbers. I thought if it was in this number system that you could recycle this so I'm appalled and ashamed that I would've been putting plastics into recycling bins that can't actually be recycled :( -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Tessa Robinson 7/30/2023 4:40 PMI often take warm leftovers with me for lunches so this was a bit more tricky given when you are travelling you don't have access to a fridge to keep the food good. Sandwiches were a great alternative! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Tessa Robinson 7/30/2023 4:37 PMI probably haven't thought about this enough before but I tend to only use balloons for special occasions. I always feel upset when I see them drift into the sky but of course they would still cause the same damage going to landfill. I will aim to use alternative decorations for celebrations now -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomThe simple act of hang drying your laundry can be an act of mindfulness. Where else in your daily routine can you make mindfulness a practice?
Tessa Robinson 7/30/2023 4:33 PMYou can make any eco process into an act of mindfulness - for e.g. creating a new recipe that is more sustainable, taking a walk and collecting rubbish from the street -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Tessa Robinson 7/30/2023 4:31 PMUsing clothes and bedding with natural fibres have production processes that are less harmful to the planet -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Tessa Robinson 7/30/2023 4:26 PMI just did the quiz to calculate my fashion footprint and I am stoked that my footprint is 94% lower than the average consumer. I have always shopped second hand quite a lot of have taken handmedowns from other people. I only tend to buy what I really need
