  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

This was a deep dive for me because I have tried so hard in the past to eliminate single use plastics from my kitchen especially, but the convenience of grocery stores creates is always a hard line to overcome. I have moved my focus to finding local farmers and local sellers for a lot of things to avoid plastic packaging and hope that this trend can continue.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family + Pets
Does your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?

My pets used the toys I made from things like sewing and craft leftovers exactly how they used the toys I bought them from the store. This actually helped me to make some more thought-provoking and advanced toys that they paid attention to for longer. Even allowed me to hide treats for them to find.

How might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?

    Melissa Paradiso's avatar
    Melissa Paradiso 7/29/2023 7:05 AM
I have always known that Styrofoam is not good for the environment, but researching further I am glad I know how it can truly affect the systems they get into and can continue to teach others and promote alternatives as a part of my job.

The President signed Executive Order 12898 in April this year which is intended to revitalize the Nation’s commitment to environmental justice. Too long to summarize here but there are good summaries online and the DOJ is responsible for maintaining an Environmental Justice Scorecard.

As July is coming to an end, I am becoming super aware of the habits I have picked up and am trying to show them to as many people as possible to ensure all of our little changes can add up into something big to help our planet.

This challenge has helped me appreciate my garden even further and has allowed me to research how to grow things more effectively to support my pets.

Excited to see how these habits that this challenge has helped me form continue after July ends.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Melissa Paradiso's avatar
    Melissa Paradiso 7/24/2023 1:25 PM
I have noticed that as I switched to bar soaps, I am much more conscious about the amount that I am using. I think with liquid soaps I felt as though the amount I poured out didn't really matter because most wouldn't stay where I placed it, thus needing to compensate, and with the bars there is less waste of product, meaning it can last a much longer time.

    Community
How does hosting a watch party help you to get to know your guests, connect them to the cause you are focusing on, and build your community?

    Melissa Paradiso's avatar
    Melissa Paradiso 7/24/2023 1:21 PM
Being able to effectively show both friends and family the things I am interested in, in a fun and inclusive way, has been a great help to getting them excited about helping with my efforts around this plastic free July, as well as continuing these habits after the month has ended.

Being able to walk around and be much more conscious about the trash found in the areas I frequent has helped me to become much more excited about visiting my favorite sites and seeing less and less trash as I, and others, help to slowly clean these areas for good.

I have a new found obsession with creating all natural treats for my pets and cannot wait to research further to make sure I can help them reach all their nutrient intake naturally.
