Fresh fruit and vegetables are a healthier choice and less expensive than the prepackaged counterparts.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?

Recycling might help reduce trash and pollution problems, but the fact is that the recycling rate in the U.S. is only about 30%. The best thing is to minimize the use of resources to begin with, this way minimizing or avoiding disruption and pollution of the environment during the extraction and manufacturing process. In an era where everything we buy seems to be shipped, it is important that packaging should be reduced to a minimum (in many cases is it is excessive). People should be aware that it is best not to create the trash. This is the message I will convey to my friends in person and on social media, and whenever possible, to those on decision-making positions by signing petitions or writing letter.

Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

Planting a garden is fun and a stress reliever. It feels good to see the plants grow and hopefully get some fresh fruit and vegetables while enjoying the wonders of nature.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

Our actions have certainly not been in favor of protecting this planet for many years now, and the degradation of our environment continues to go up at an alarming rate. Too many things concern me, but the ones I think are having the most immediate impact on me and my community are air and water pollution. It is not easy to change our ways, but everything starts with each one of us. This also goes for encouraging our leaders to address our environmental problems on a global scale.
