Family + Pets

Discover Together

I will spend 30 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Estimate Your Ecological Footprint

I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Plastic Free Lunch Boxes

I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Study

Learn about Plastic Production

Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Practice Sustainable Fashion

I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Use a Reusable Mug

If possible, I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Skip Plastic Bags

When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Study

Complete a Waste Audit

I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Numbers Everywhere

The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Follow the Chasing Arrows

The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Use Reusable Utensils

I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Go Strawless

I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.

COMPLETED 27

Balloons Blow

Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 30 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.

COMPLETED

Plastic History Buff

Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.

What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

So many things are individually packaged using plastic. You don't realize how much waste you produce that will not easily biodegrade! Trying to buy in bulk is a good way to reduce putting all those little packages into a landfill

Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

I think many people would embrace reusable straws if they became more readily available. Restaurants would be a great place to start, particularly with their large-scale sanitizers, which would be able to clean them thoroughly between guests. This would give people a chance to try a reusable straw out, while also reducing the number of straws going into the landfill.

Switching to reusable bags rather than plastic is a relatively easy switch to make in my daily life. These days there are so many fun and unique reusable bag patterns! And I always get compliments on my ZooTampa giraffe tote :)

What did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?

I wasn't surprised that transportation was a huge part of my ecologic footprint, but what I did find surprising was the lack of alternatives. To get from my house to work (approximately 14 miles each way) using my car, it takes 20 minutes. Using public transportation, it would take me over 2 hours on 4 separate buses. That's each way, mind you. I can't imagine doing that 5 days a week, twice a day. We need a better system of transportation in the US and we need to ensure that it's easier for everyone who wants access to the network to be able to use it.

What did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?

We need to consider the financial costs when we message alternatives to single-use items and we need to make sustainable options more easy to access for all people. Not everyone can afford a reusable option or an alternative if it costs more. When I go to the store, I usually buy whatever is on sale due to my budget restrictions. While reusable options may be more cost effective in the long run, my budget is month-to-month, so paying more in the short term is not always a feasible option. And getting to bulk stores or refill locations is not always an option, both financially and in terms of time and resources (i.e. gas)

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Amy Nachbor's avatar

I use a lot of versatile pieces in my wardrobe. Things that can get mixed and matched in different ways to easily create new looks without the need to purchase more items. It also helps that I have reached a point in my life that I don't care what others think about how I look. If it's comfortable and appropriate to the situation, then I wear whatever I want!

Were you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?

    Amy Nachbor's avatar
    Amy Nachbor 7/31/2023 7:10 AM
I was surprised by how little 'recycling' actually gets recycled. We need to get better at reducing our use of single use plastic, but I don't believe we will ever fully get rid of it, so we need to come up with a better way to reuse and recycle those materials.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Amy Nachbor's avatar
    Amy Nachbor 7/31/2023 7:06 AM
I think the greatest concern I have about human impact on the planet is the fact that many people do not understand the scale of the changes that are already happening. It's easy to dismiss a degree change in global temperature because we experience huge swings in temperature on a daily basis and there is a disconnect between knowing what is "climate" and what is "weather". That goes back to a combination of the politization of science and a lack of environmental science education. We need to improve how we message about environmental issues and make sure we address the concerns real people have, as well as the science.
