Jane's actions
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 10 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.

Jane Mullen 7/31/2023 8:48 AMI love the planet! I'm glad I've learned information through this challenge to be more mindful of the plastic I'm using. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Jane Mullen 7/28/2023 10:42 AMHow I can help is a big question for me, especially when its primarily corporations people are up against. -
Jane Mullen 7/28/2023 10:31 AMSeeing our team impact is pretty neat! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does hosting a watch party help you to get to know your guests, connect them to the cause you are focusing on, and build your community?
Jane Mullen 7/27/2023 6:31 AMIt allowed us to discuss these issues. You don't know what you don't know, so learning about a particular issue is the first step to doing something about it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
Jane Mullen 7/26/2023 1:15 PMNot purchasing plastic water bottles is a good start, but also encouraging others to use reusable water bottles and discussing the social and environmental impacts of plastic water bottles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Jane Mullen 7/26/2023 1:14 PMThe most difficult part of recycling is not necessarily remembering what my local recycling facility will take, so I have to look it up each time I go to recycle something. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Jane Mullen 7/26/2023 1:12 PMWalking around and being observant (to pick up litter) allows for me to notice things or people I normally wouldn't -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Jane Mullen 7/24/2023 8:14 AMNot using plastic bags is easy for me, as I previously purchased cotton reusable bags that I bring with me to the grocery. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow can you and your little one exercise your creativity without creating more plastic waste?
Jane Mullen 7/21/2023 11:38 AMI don't have little ones, but if I do get creative, I could use things like leaves to either create paint or dry them and crumble them for "confetti." -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Jane Mullen 7/21/2023 11:37 AMBuying in bulk is generally cheaper, and bar soap is supposedly better for your skin.
