Deborah's actions
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Bathroom
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Bedroom
Reusing clothing instead of clothes shopping
Only buy new clothing on rare, specific occasions, when an appropriate item cannot be found from Goodwill or hand-me-downs. I do buy new underwear and shoes but only when the old ones are worn out. Simple, acceptable clothing is highest priority, more important than changing fashions. I chose this action because textiles don't recycle and it does not make sense to change styles/think about clothing due to marketing or peer pressure ( I do, however, try to look neat and not attract attention due to odd clothing. Clothes have to fit properly, but I usually find good options). I have been wearing the same 4 sets of hospital scrubs for 5 years and spend less than $200/year on clothes.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWas this an easy or difficult swap for you to make? Did you have any concerns before making the swap?
Deborah Morris 7/31/2023 6:38 PMI tried the new detergent for the first time today! Thanks for introducing me to this option! My machine didn't like using powder (it is a front-loading water saving machine with drawer for detergent), so next time I'll water it down a little before using. Clothes were perfectly clean and I feel much better not using plastic and pollutants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomHow can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?
Deborah Morris 7/31/2023 6:36 PMI didn't know there was an option for making/buying makeup in packaging and of itself that is not damaging to animals and the environment, and am really happy to become acquainted with these links. I will purchase and tell everyone I know about these options. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomEven though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?
Deborah Morris 7/21/2023 8:44 AMThis is bad news, because so many people use disposable wipes. I am glad to know this and for myself am using the ones I have left (which I put in the trash and do not flush) and then will not buy any more. I work at the hospital where many of these are used but luckily they have a rule that we can't flush them. The hospital in general, though is a terrible environmental violator. (Don't know the answer for that, since so much is disposable to prevent infection.)-
Kris Hay 7/21/2023 9:37 AMHappily, we missed the wipes craze. They are something I see regularly on my litter walks. Like cigarette butts, I don’t think most folks are aware of the plastic content — I wasn’t, until I noticed how they don’t break down like paper. Congrats on eliminating them from your household! 🙌🏽

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Deborah Morris 7/17/2023 7:10 AMI recycle every possible plastic item that I have to buy at the grocery store. Number 4 and 5 recycling appears to be a scam? My garage is full of yogurt and tofu containers that are number 5s. I use cloth bags for produce. .. no need for those little plastic voluntary produce bags. Of course we use cloth bags for all groceries.-
Deborah Morris 7/21/2023 8:51 AMIs there anything we can do with "#5" plastic other than reuse? (I reuse but have far too many extras)
