Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Jamie Morneweck 7/26/2023 5:31 AMI thought I had a much smaller impact than the score I received. Always more work to do! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Jamie Morneweck 7/26/2023 5:23 AMRoad snacks are always a must for road trips. We plan ahead when we go grocery shopping so that we can avoid additional costs, stops, and plastic! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
Jamie Morneweck 7/26/2023 5:22 AMIt works best when I have only a few dishes, but it's a pretty easy transition. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomThe simple act of hang drying your laundry can be an act of mindfulness. Where else in your daily routine can you make mindfulness a practice?
Jamie Morneweck 7/26/2023 5:22 AMI use a bucket in the shower to catch water as it heats up for showers, and then use it to water plants. I save water from boiling potatoes and pasta to water plants. I was clothes in cold water and use washing sheets. I have dryer balls to reduce static cling and to reduce dry time when I do need to dry clothes. It all adds up! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Jamie Morneweck 7/26/2023 5:20 AMI do not have an inventory of single-use plastics, however I try to purchase items in glass or paper whenever possible. I also use my reusable produce bags to help eliminate the need for a plastic bag when picking those items. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Jamie Morneweck 7/26/2023 5:19 AMIt can be really tricky to buy produce without plastic, when that's all that is offered. I've been eating lots of melons, mangos, and pineapple, since they aren't sold in bags. Apples are sometimes sold individually, and I have reusable produce bags for them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?
Jamie Morneweck 7/26/2023 5:17 AMI'm still figuring out bread recipes that work for me. It feels good to make my own bread, even if they aren't all winners. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Jamie Morneweck 7/26/2023 5:17 AMIt isn't surprising, because I already knew this information. However, I try to reduce my plastic waste whenever possible, and will choose glass or cardboard if they are available. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Jamie Morneweck 7/26/2023 5:16 AMLess waste, lighter in weight than plastic filled bottles, and less mess are all wins for using bar soaps and shampoos! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Jamie Morneweck 7/26/2023 5:15 AMMaking my own cleaning products is simple and uses less harmful chemicals while cleaning just as well. Baking soda and vinegar are my go-to cleaning products!
