Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 20 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Bathroom
See the Green
I will recycle used contact lenses and packaging.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Bryana Moreno 7/07/2023 2:18 PMI wasn't aware of the amount of resources required to support everyone if they lived like me! I was a little surprised that my ecological footprint was a little bit more than USA's. I'm definitely looking into shopping locally more often than I do now. -
Bryana Moreno 7/07/2023 2:07 PMI love Plastic Free July because it is helping me become more aware of my plastic use and is also helping me develop healthy habits for myself and the planet :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Bryana Moreno 7/07/2023 1:57 PMHonestly, I wasn't aware about how much of an impact balloons have on the environment until I did some research. I personally never did balloon releases but I also never took the time to stop and think about where balloons end up after using them. To get my friends and family involved, I would start off by asking them where do they think balloons end up after we're done using them and then go into the fun alternatives. The eco-friendly crochet 'water balloons' are my favorite! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Bryana Moreno 7/02/2023 11:34 AMBamboo toothbrushes are eco friendly and have softer bristles that are far more gentler on your gums compared to plastic toothbrushes. I feel like mentioning how eco friendly these toothbrushes are is enough to influence others in my community!
