Sherri's actions
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Kitchen
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 4 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 5 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.

Sherri Molde 7/31/2023 4:43 PMHate to see this end. I've been a lot more mindful of plastic use. In the past my focus was on purchasing items in packaging that was recyclable. Now my focus has been how can I change what I purchase to something that doesn't contain plastics. At times I could make other choices while at other times I could not. I was shocked today when I purchased some tennis shoes and usually I would refuse bags, however the clerk made a big production about how they have stopped using plastic bags to reusable bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Sherri Molde 7/30/2023 7:31 PMI felt like I was doing pretty well until the recommendations. While I know I need to work on food waste I was surprised at how much of a impact it would be if I star ed composting for the garden. So it looks like that will be something that we start working on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Sherri Molde 7/18/2023 5:36 PMWe recycle more than we throw away. We could do better in that my husband has a tendency to throw items in the trash as he doesn't want to rinse something out. We struggle with cooking for just the two of us. While we do make frozen meals out of the majority of leftovers we could do better with our food waste. Looking into how we could start composting, just not sure how to keep all of the animal visitors out of that area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Sherri Molde 7/13/2023 8:15 PMNatural fibers also require less water to produce, are processed with fewer and less harmful chemicals, and are biodegradable. This combination means that using natural fibers for clothes reduces risks to both human and environmental health.Sep 24, 2022https://crannorganic.com › blogs -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Sherri Molde 7/12/2023 5:47 PMThat even the very first plastics that were created have still not degraded. They are still around and intact somewhere most likely in a landfill.
Check out this commercial that I saw earlier this week and how plastics are being made for the future.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyRecycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Sherri Molde 7/10/2023 2:23 PMI was surprised by the number of items in each category and that I could be recycling more items than I thought. I did find it interesting that the company here does not make me remove labels. They request everything is rinsed out. My mother lives in Missouri and she has to remove every label and every item has to be clean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Sherri Molde 7/06/2023 8:48 PMThe most difficult part of recycling is getting my husband to rinse containers prior to putting them in the recycling bin. It's also difficult to get family and friends to understand that one trash can is for recyclables and the other is for trash. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself and your family? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?
Sherri Molde 7/05/2023 6:06 PMI'm not sure how to take sustainable living beyond myself and family other than to investigate and research initiatives that I can support. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
