Anna Reeve 7/31/2023 8:07 PMThis also surprised me! I was saddened to see how far a balloon could actually travel or how far a piece of plastic could end up from where it started. It always something to remember in the long run!

Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.

Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 60 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 60 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 60 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.

Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 10 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Kitchen
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family + Pets
Sustainable Suds: Pet Edition
I will replace my pet's shampoo with an eco-friendly shampoo bar or refillable shampoo option.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.

Kristina Merola 7/31/2023 7:39 PMIt has been a very enlightening month. I have learned so much and I have definitely become more aware of my plastic consumption, whether by choice or seemingly forced upon me. This was a great experience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Kristina Merola 7/31/2023 7:37 PMThe preproduction plastic pellets are also a substantial percentage of plastic pollution. I was unnerved at how ubiquitous it is, how frequently the pellets are found on far away beaches. The images of sea birds with crops full of plastic or sea turtles chomping at plastic bags has always been so disturbing to me. I have not seen too many journal articles on how the plastic in the environment has effected plants and if it is also accumulating in them, as well...something to look in to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Kristina Merola 7/31/2023 7:29 PMI was very interested in the chemical composition of the bioplastics and why they break down like petroleum-based plastics. Our town does not accept bioplastic waste at this time. We usually use reusable stainless steel utensils and porcelain plates instead of any plastic or bioplastic items, but I will keep in mind how items I buy in the future are discarded after use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself and your family? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?
Kristina Merola 7/30/2023 7:26 PMOne can work towards broader changes in sustainable living by supporting initiatives at the local, state, and federal levels that would decrease our dependence on single-user plastics. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Kristina Merola 7/30/2023 9:35 AMLearning more about the specific compounds that make up each type of plastic was very interesting. I plan on using this information when I need to purchase items in plastic containers to ensure they are recyclable in my county. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Kristina Merola 7/29/2023 8:27 PMWhen I think about styrofoam and environmental justice, I think about food packaging . A number of take-out restaurants use styrofoam because it is the cheapest kind of container. The packages break into microplastics that pollute local neighborhoods, causing harm to the environment. Also, if a hot item is added to the styrofoam package, it melts, causing the vapors from the chemicals in the styrofoam to be absorbed by the food. This causes harm to the consumer. -
Kristina Merola 7/29/2023 8:18 PMThere are only 2 days left. This has been a great exercise in being more aware of my actions. I really enjoyed learning more about the plastics all around us and how to use less. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Kristina Merola 7/28/2023 5:20 PMIt's everywhere. Bags wrapped in bags wrapped in packaging. I did notice that the more packaging there seemed to be, the less product you actually got. For example, a package of snack pack cookies was more expensive than the single container and you got more in the bulk-type package. I know they're more convenient for kids lunch boxes, but you end up paying more for less, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
