Carol's actions
Bathroom
Purchase toilet paper that is not packaged with plastic.
To reduce the amount of plastic coming in our home, we purchase toilet paper from a source that uses paper / cardboard for shipping instead of plastic.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 30 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 90 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

Carol Maus 7/29/2023 8:38 AMTaking care of our planet is a life style, not a one month challenge. Let us continue and expand our actions to improve everyone’s life style! -
Carol Maus 7/29/2023 8:33 AMThe hardest part of this challenge is having the time to check in on a daily or even a weekly basis. That said, the best part of plastic free July is that we are learning new ways to add to the ways we were already practicing to avoid single use plastic that becomes plastic pollution. And learning new ways to reuse, repurpose, and recycle everything, not just plastic. -
Carol Maus 7/13/2023 4:35 PMFor the last 20 years I packed my own reusable silverware in my reusable lunch container. My lunch food is also in reusable containers which I bring home to clean and reuse along with my silverware. It has become a daily habit. -
Carol Maus 7/10/2023 3:24 AMResearched laundry strips as a replacement to laundry pods. Placed my first order for laundry strips! Looking forward to receiving the strips and giving them a try. Research took about 30 minutes. -
Carol Maus 7/05/2023 2:27 PMThe person who cleans the office where I work, uses a new clear plastic bag in each person’s waste basket, when emptying the waste basket. I understand the person needs to be protected from any germs I may have put in the waste basket. (Used Kleenex, etc.) To reduce the use of clear plastic bags, I take my waste basket to the kitchen at work and empty the contents into the larger kitchen waste basket, which has the lunch waste for the day, making my clear plastic bag in my waste basket multi-use. It’s a very small step, but perhaps some co-workers will follow. -
Carol Maus 7/04/2023 5:56 AMPicked up 20 pieces of trash at our neighborhood park during our morning walk. Most of the items were close to the park’s trash can or along the main road.
