Cheyenne's actions
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 7 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 30 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Family + Pets
DIY Cat Litter
I will swap out my cat's litter for sawdust, mulch, or dirt with baking soda.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.

Cheyenne Mathes 7/23/2023 7:57 AMA little over a week left, stay strong everyone!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Cheyenne Mathes 7/22/2023 11:47 AMOne of my favorite perks of a backyard garden is the increase of pollinators I've been seeing! There are many other benefits too though, like knowing that there were no pesticides or other chemicals used on the produce you grow. Plus, it's always fun to flex your green thumb by sharing your harvest with friends and family. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Cheyenne Mathes 7/16/2023 9:36 AMLocally what concerns me is the lack of action. I feel like many people believe their small actions won't make a difference, so they chose not to spend any of their time trying.
The global concern is one I only just recently discovered and one that's harder to solve - the corporations lobbying to make it harder to remove plastics. I guess I could also say my global concern is greed. It still completely baffles me that people could live life freely knowing they're making and spending money on something that's destroying our planet.-
Anna Slovinski 7/20/2023 10:21 AMI agree with you. Most people I know would be like why even try and don't realize the difference one person can make if they just attempt to try.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Cheyenne Mathes 7/14/2023 9:47 AMI always grab any trash I find while walking around our zoo because it fills me with pride! Knowing that I can contribute to keeping our planet healthier by cleaning makes the task so much easier. I also love that it sparks conversation and draws attention to something not everyone sees. Trash has an easy way of camouflaging itself so sometimes its almost like a scavenger hunt! It's easier to help the spark spread by setting an example!-
Anna Slovinski 7/20/2023 10:24 AMI also pick up trash around the zoo. and in my neighborhood with the kids. Its nice living in a cleaner environment, idk why anyone would choose otherwise.

Cheyenne Mathes 7/14/2023 9:04 AMI'm mad keen on recycling because I'm worried about the next generation and where all this waste we're producing is going. It has to stop. I wash out my plastic containers and recycle envelopes, everything I possibly can.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Cheyenne Mathes 7/09/2023 1:06 PM"If everyone lived like you, we would need 2.8 Earths."
The average American result is 5 Earths needed to combat our ecological footprint, but getting that result was still eye opening. The question about comparing my trash generation to my neighbors has me interested to count how many recycling bins are on the curb next Thursday. Perhaps this is an opportunity to bring others to the Green Side.-

Cheyenne Mathes 7/09/2023 9:28 AMThe hardest part of recycling in a larger household is teaching and reminding everyone what can actually be recycled. I've had to remove way more plastic bags from our recycling bin than I'd like to admit, but the fight continues.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Cheyenne Mathes 7/07/2023 2:06 PMI recently watched a video that discussed how China had to ban the import of recyclable items. Countries were shipping their recyclable waste to China to have them find a solution for it. This absolutely blew my mind. To think, even though we may be trying to do our part at home by sorting our waste, it could just end up in another version of a landfill. It was very eye opening to realize, I’d be better off to not purchase anything that could be waste in the first place.-
