Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Using compost to fertilize and lighten the soil in my garden
For many years, I have created one or more compost piles in my yard to keep yard waste from going into plastic bags and into the landfill and to limit the need for plastic fertilizer containers and preventing the many adverse effects of using chemical fertilizers
Community
Use Rainwater to water garden
I have two rainbarrels at my house and I use them almost everyday to water my plants during the growing season
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.

Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 60 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Peter Martin 7/07/2023 3:27 AMI notice we still have a ways to go on this account - im thinking cheese - we tend to get single size cheese snacks for lunches and should probably get block cheese instead - thats hard one. My wife does bring her own produce bags so we're generally pretty good there but we can do better- we get crackers in large boxes instead of buying small wrapped portions . -

Peter Martin 7/06/2023 3:40 AMShout out to my Son and Zoo compadre John Martin for trying something new and growing his own peas - these made the trip safely from Carney to Freeland and survived while totally outdoing my deer/rabbit/groundhog ravaged attempts in the garden. Of course growing your produce helps lower carbon emmisions, reduces packaging and allows you to control pesticide and fertilizer use.As neil young sang homegrown s alright with me homegrown is way it should be homegrown is a good thing plant that bell and let it ring ....... come to think of it not sure he was talking about peas -
Peter Martin 7/06/2023 3:19 AMA little hose repair this morning gives me two hose drains for my rain barrels so i can fill any size watering can - also repaired rather than throw away my good yellow hose. of course probably more in the spirit of the month to not run over the hose with my lawn mower in first place -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
