Cassidy's actions
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Family + Pets
Invest in a lint brush
A waste-free alternative to disposable lint rollers, a lint brush can be used to remove pet fur from clothing and furniture. They also can be used on carpets, saving the electricity used by a vacuum.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.

Anna Reeve 7/07/2023 10:40 AMI love seeing this! I've been able to find a lot of these types of options at grocery stores - especially target ( yay target!). Having this on vacation lets you know that the word is really getting out!

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Cassidy Martin 7/07/2023 5:31 AMPicking up trash has been hard for me since I’m currently on vacation in a very clean area. However, I managed to find some trash on the peak of Mt. Washington of all places. Grimace is having his birthday in my trash bag right now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomEven though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?
Cassidy Martin 7/07/2023 5:29 AMEven though many flushable wipes say “Only flush one wipe at a time”, it is in very fine print. People need to be aware that companies can pretty much lie to your face if you aren’t careful, and that this shouldn’t be an acceptable marketing tactic to keep a product in existence.-
Patricia Jonas 7/08/2023 4:22 AMWhat this brings up for me is the challenge of fact vs wishful thinking. If a marketer uses a word like “flushable”, that is the idea that may stick in a consumers mind and the fine print is not considered. And so a more complete understanding of the products benefits vs costs is needed. In a world where we have huge amounts of information that is potentially available to us, it seems that we look less at the details. So events like PFJ are a great way to share those details when we get a chance- I’ve started to use the word “wishcycling” more with folks who are telling me that they recycle. It starts a conversation about the “dirty details.”

Cassidy Martin 7/03/2023 9:03 AMI made a challenge similar to the rubber glove one. I find lint brushes to be MUCH more effective for waste-free fur removal!
