Camryn Martin 7/28/2023 9:06 AMMixed feelings about PFJ ending soon. This team has done such an amazing job and has been such a source of hope and inspiration for our planet's future! Keep that momentum going. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWhich microfiber solution did you choose? How has it changed your laundry routine?
Camryn Martin 7/28/2023 8:57 AMThis one I've struggle with because many microfiber solutions are pricy. I think the best option is to try to get natural fibers over synthetics. If anyone has any suggestions they would be very welcome. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Camryn Martin 7/28/2023 8:56 AMDefinitely food packaging and food waste/scraps. It's kind of upsetting how much waste just two people in a household can create - especially when we do recycle a lot of things and eat lots of fresh food/cook most meals ourselves. I'm going to try to find compost dropoff and make that part of my routine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat are organizations in your region doing to address plastic pollution or other related issues? How can you support them?
Camryn Martin 7/22/2023 6:25 AMTrashFree Maryland, Environment Maryland, and PlasticWatch are all doing great research into plastic pollution, as well as advocating for legislative changes related to plastics. I can't always financially support, but they make it easy to write to officials or attend a cleanup and I can definitely do that.-
Debra Debra Lee Norton Wear 7/29/2023 5:09 AMWe definitely can write letters and participate in clean ups and we can also vote. All of those actions will have an impact long term

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Camryn Martin 7/22/2023 6:08 AMIt was a little challenging, to be honest. I always think I'll pack snacks for road trips and the like, but when I don't I have no problem stopping to get food along the way. Road trips are one of the few times I eat fast food, so it was tough to pass up that habit! It definitely saved me money in the end though to pack snacks from home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Camryn Martin 7/21/2023 6:48 AMI thought I was doing pretty well - I commute on an electric scooter, I don't eat much meat, I don't buy new things very often. But my earth overshoot day was in May and if everyone lived like me we'd need 2+ earths, which is truly upsetting. I'm definitely going to try to be more energy efficient in my home and try to switch to a renewable source of energy if I can. -
Camryn Martin 7/20/2023 11:23 AMStill trying to maintain momentum - this challenge has definitely made me more aware of ways I can still improve my plastics use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Camryn Martin 7/20/2023 11:14 AMI learned the term "wish-cycling" a few years ago - it's the idea that people put a lot of things in the recycling bin that they're unsure about in the hopes that they will be recyclable. Knowing what exactly can and cannot be recycled in my area is helpful for avoiding contaminating the waste stream and ensuring that what can be recycled is actually recycled!-
Ginni La Rosa-Ponsini 7/20/2023 8:47 PMI have seen people put non-recyclables into recycling bins countless times and it is incredibly frustrating! I recently came across an app recommended by my county's waste management site called RecycleCoach, which does a good job of categorizing what materials can be recycled etc.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?
Camryn Martin 7/18/2023 5:21 AMIt generally makes me feel empowered and pretty upbeat - I love knowing where my food is coming from and exactly what goes into making it. I do struggle with the motivation - prepackaged food is very convenient and as much as I love homemade goods, they do require more energy on my part. -
Camryn Martin 7/11/2023 5:00 AMWill be doing some grocery shopping soon for the first time since PFJ started. It will be interesting to see how easy/difficult it is to avoid plastics. I've got some cotton mesh produce bags, but there are always small sneaky plastics like twist ties and labels! I wish more stores offered bulk buy/loose produce rather than pre-portioning.
