Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

Like many of us in the zoo, I am living in a city I am not from, so I do a lot of traveling to and form home. I have found a small cooler is my best friend for packing food on longer drives. I also freeze a (re-usable) water bottle to use as an ice pack, and doubles as a drink later on!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Jenna Lyons's avatar
    Jenna Lyons 7/11/2023 7:09 AM
I have found most plastic packaging used in stores is either not recycled in my area, or very difficult to find a location that processes the particular plastics
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Jenna Lyons's avatar
    Jenna Lyons 7/11/2023 7:08 AM
The easiest way I have found for bringing a lunch with out using any single-use plastic containers has been making a slightly larger dinner the night before, and packing the leftovers in a reusable container
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

    Jenna Lyons's avatar
    Jenna Lyons 7/07/2023 10:29 AM
I have seen all sorts of new pollinators show up! I also enjoy the fresher/bolder taste of fresh herbs and spices, versus their dry packed counterparts.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family + Pets
How does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?

    Jenna Lyons's avatar
    Jenna Lyons 7/07/2023 10:28 AM
Buying used sometimes means having to search a little harder for something specific you may be looking for, but is very rewarding when you find it. But it's also fun to go into a thrift store and 'let the store tell you what you need' by finding unexpected surprises!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family + Pets
Had you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?

    Jenna Lyons's avatar
    Jenna Lyons 7/04/2023 9:21 AM
Unfortunately I find 'dead' balloons in the zoo pretty often. I typically share something about the find on social media and use it as a lesson for friends and family, especially when found in an animal enclosure.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

    Jenna Lyons's avatar
    Jenna Lyons 7/04/2023 9:10 AM
Living in the city has definitely made this challenge easier with the bag ban, but many delivery services still use plastic bags. I requested to not receive any plastic and a local restaurant complied!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

    Jenna Lyons's avatar
    Jenna Lyons 7/04/2023 9:06 AM
I typically keep a couple clean mugs in my car so I don't have to worry about forgetting one if I decide to get an unplanned coffee while out and about
