  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

    Debi Luke 7/31/2023 6:29 PM
Some of the items I have switched out included reusable beeswax covers for saran wrap and reusable silicone bags for ziplock bags.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Debi Luke's avatar
    Debi Luke 7/31/2023 6:25 PM
I am constantly amazed at the large amount of unnecessary packaging being used in the grocery store! We need to appeal to the packaging cost saving advantage the companies can benefit from so they are motivated to increasing their bottom line.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
Even though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?

    Debi Luke's avatar
    Debi Luke 7/31/2023 6:21 PM
Product marketing is subjective at best and often fails to address negatives along with the positives. When anyone hears a product is flushable, the inclination is to assume that the product is environmentally safe. Its important to do your own research on messaging and marketing.

Trying to beat the heat? Instead of filling single use water balloons for your kids, use refillable, silicone water bombs! The grandkids love them!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

    Debi Luke's avatar
    Debi Luke 7/31/2023 5:57 PM
I've purchased reusable brown glass bottles and make my own vinegar-based cleaning product which work equally well and cost significantly less.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    Debi Luke's avatar
    Debi Luke 7/31/2023 5:45 PM
I have switched to purchasing larger quantity shampoos and conditioners and refill my reusable travel and shower containers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

    Debi Luke's avatar
    Debi Luke 7/31/2023 5:35 PM
Aluminum-free deodorants reduce odor but do not block perspiration, so your natural body function is not blocked.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
How can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?

    Debi Luke's avatar
    Debi Luke 7/31/2023 5:27 PM
Its all part of the bigger, "Live sustainably" conversation....I encourage family, friends and groups I provide talks for to simply think before purchasing. If more and more people select minimally packaged items over those with excess packaging, companies will change their practices-purchasing power matters!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom
Which microfiber solution did you choose? How has it changed your laundry routine?

    Debi Luke's avatar
    Debi Luke 7/31/2023 5:22 PM
I purchased a Cora Ball for the washing machine which tangles fiber and reduces the amount of fiber breaking off our clothes. It helps our clothes last longer while simultaneously helps reduce the amount of fibers and microplastics entering our water.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    Debi Luke's avatar
    Debi Luke 7/31/2023 5:12 PM
Clothing made of sustainable plant fibers, such as cotton, silk, linen, hemp and rayon are more environmentally friendly than those made of synthetic fabrics. Similarly, sustainable animal-based fibers such as sheep's wool, alpaca fleece, camel hair, and spider silk are more ethically sources than fur or leather.
