Amanda 's actions
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 30 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 25 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Amanda LeBon 7/26/2023 6:34 AMIt's difficult to only purchase what you need, my most frustrating purchase has been peaches, because they're only lasting 2 days before becoming moldy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Amanda LeBon 7/21/2023 7:19 AMWent to a little off the path park, and found the garbage can had been knocked over. Gathered everything up and took garbage to a local dumpster to make sure it went somewhere other than the ground.-
Victoria Hyland 7/21/2023 9:04 AMAwesome job! Thank you for caring about outdoor spaces and keeping them clean! I am hoping to do a bit of a cleanup this weekend when I go out.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Amanda LeBon 7/18/2023 8:10 AMIt helps, when most things are in the garden, or we buy from a local farm. I made my own Tofu from red lentils for the protein. It was really good.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Amanda LeBon 7/17/2023 8:17 AMThe garden is looking good, I have been using banana peels soaked in water as fertilizer.-
Victoria Hyland 7/18/2023 6:09 AMThats a really good idea, I'll have to try that. I've seen other people use eggshells too!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?
Amanda LeBon 7/14/2023 10:50 AMUsing oats from a local farm and my own peanutbutter, they were very happy-
