Michelle's actions

Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Bathroom

Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.

Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Bathroom
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Michelle Kotsagrelos 7/10/2023 7:15 AMConvenience. Using steel razors is how I started shaving, so it was easy to go back. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomTake a moment to estimate how many disposable daily contacts you may have used over the years. What would be your impact now of switching to a contact brand with a longer lifespan?
Michelle Kotsagrelos 7/05/2023 8:42 AMBeen doing that for years - longer lifespan contacts. And since I do not wear them that often, I prolong their life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Michelle Kotsagrelos 7/05/2023 8:41 AMMakes it look clean and make it a nice place to live. I participate in a clean-up once or twice a year. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Michelle Kotsagrelos 7/05/2023 8:38 AMI keep a reusable hot/cold drink container at work and in my car for drinks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Michelle Kotsagrelos 7/05/2023 8:36 AMWhen you order take-out, charge "pennies" for utensils. Home deliveries should never give plastic utensils. Unfortunately, if you eat in at a fast-food restaurant, you need quick and easy things. Someone should invent biodegradable utensils. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Michelle Kotsagrelos 7/05/2023 8:31 AMMost restaurants I go to, don't give straws unless you ask for them. Unfortunately, those straws are plastic, not "paper."
