Christopher's actions
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 16 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 4 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 6 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 13 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 0 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 2 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Christopher Kopp 7/31/2023 5:56 PMReuse certain clothes/accessories in different ways to create new and creative looks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Christopher Kopp 7/18/2023 12:38 PMI will need to keep the "health and safety" purchases a priority, even after this challenge is over. This will not only help the environment, but my bank account as well... It will benefit the environment, and myself, in multiple ways! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Christopher Kopp 7/18/2023 12:37 PMI had never considered this before... It's fun to release them, but I never thought about the impact once the balloon falls back to the ground. Although balloons should be avoided all together, I would encourage those who use them to not release them, but find another way to dispose of them once they are done with their use. Obviously still not an "optimal" solution, but at least it would solve some problems. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Christopher Kopp 7/18/2023 12:34 PMI really haven't seen much change in the community about reusable straws... There is a lot (locally) about plastic bags, but not as much about straws. I will say that I have been to places that use compostable/recyclable straws, but they tend to get soggy so they are hard to use at times. I would be nice for them to come up with a better product to promote more use!
