  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

Vinegar and baking soda are great at unclogging a clogged drain.

What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

I prefer bamboo, it's pretty, lightweight and does a great job. I recommend it to friends.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

It just makes sense to refill bottles than to buy new containers every time you travel. I've been doing it since I grew up camping, we spent a lot of time in nature and I hated when plastic became to norm instead of glass, paper, pottery or metal containers. Human inventions in the last 100 years or more to "save time" has just ruined the earth, ocean and the air we breathe.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
Even though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?

    Suzanne Koporc's avatar
    Suzanne Koporc 7/10/2023 12:26 PM
I didn't know they were "flushable, I hardly ever use them and I've never flushed on.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

It's a challenge to buy things strictly made of natural fibers but they are well work it when you can find them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

Starting to read cook books again, so I can make some of the things I buy (bread, tortillas, cookies, etc.) to cut out plastic. Also visiting the butcher who packages in paper instead of plastic.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

I keep cloth bags in my car trunk at all times and automatically grab one or two when I shop. I like cloth because you can throw them in the wash, they don't rip like plastic bags from the stores and they are biodegradable when they start to fall apart.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Suzanne Koporc's avatar
    Suzanne Koporc 7/06/2023 5:03 AM
When I go to grocery, I buy as many veggies as I can in bulk bins and put them in my reusable cloth grocery bags to avoid plastic wrapping. I self check out too, so its not a hassled for the check out person.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Beyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?

    Suzanne Koporc's avatar
    Suzanne Koporc 7/06/2023 5:00 AM
I have stainless steel and bamboo reusable cutlery. The bamboo sets include knife, spoon, fork, straw w/ brush and chopsticks. Stainless steel has a knife and a spoon/fork combination. I keep them in my lunch bag so they are always ready for work or travel.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
How does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?

    Suzanne Koporc's avatar

I found that if I prep my fruit and veggies when I buy them and put them in reusable containers, I eat more fruit and vegetables throughout the day because it's easy to grab since its been washed and sliced for eating immediately. It also helps me not to waste food and since the containers of clear it makes my fridge very inviting. Watch Home Edit for inspiration!
