Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.

I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 5 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Community
Donate Zero Waste Period Products
I will donate 10 zero waste period kits to young people with periods so that they can reduce their waste and the financial burden of menstruation while continuing their education.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Jess Kohring 7/28/2023 1:38 PMWhen you are invested in your community and taking responsibility for it, you are more connected to it. I feel like it keeps me more intentionally present when I am out and about too and there is a sense of pride in making a tangible difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsWe know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!
Jess Kohring 7/28/2023 1:36 PMWe have 4 four-legged kids, Niffler Lennon Butterbeer, Ellie Mae, Sally, and Oska. They are cookoo bananas in the best way possible and all love our kids in their own ways. They seek them out for cuddles, play, snacks, and everything in between. There is nothing more soothing than their cuddles or the excitement that they show every time they see you. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Jess Kohring 7/25/2023 9:56 AMI can see the shift in stores to try to reduce the amount of packaging used. However, there is still so much and it feels impossible to complete a shopping trip without bringing a lot home...even when you're actively trying not to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Jess Kohring 7/21/2023 1:26 PMWhile it takes more intention, it is definitely healthier. We're also finding that the kids actually are snacking less as the fresh fruit and veggies is more filling and lasts longer. It's becoming more of a fun family activity too as they are trying all sorts of new things - with varying degrees of success. Lol. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?
Jess Kohring 7/21/2023 1:24 PMThe bread that we're making is SOOO much tastier than the store bought ones. With the bread maker we got from our local Buy Nothing Group, it's super easy too!-
Jess Kohring 7/21/2023 2:09 PMWe've been putting it in the fridge to help with that especially as it's getting hotter. We go through it within 4-5 days though I'd say. The loaves that we're making aren't huge - maybe 8 inches long? -
Autumn Hilden 7/21/2023 1:53 PMHow long is the homemade bread staying fresh for you? There's only two of us, and it takes weeks for us to get through a loaf of bread. I would love to switch but I think it might get moldy before we can finish it.
