REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Jennifer Klotz 7/31/2023 5:39 PMI noticed on multiple occasions that landscaping companies and municipalities did not collect plastic debris prior to mowing. Shredded material was found on school grounds and along medians, not just personal property. This motivates me to contact those responsible and request they enact a policy or a more affective method for ensuring plastic, and other items, are picked up first. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow can having access to zero waste period products help people who menstruate overcome barriers to education or other opportunities?
Jennifer Klotz 7/31/2023 2:22 PMFirst and foremost, it allows them to literally GO to school. Living in America, this was never really an option so it’s hard to think those in other countries may have to choose…or have the choice made for them, which is more often the case. Using zero waste period products proves just about anything can be modified for the betterment of the planet. So it’s a lesson in itself too. This knowledge could lead users to feel more confident with other plastic free items and not like an outcast. Zero wasters and plastic freers are the cool kids! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHave you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?
Jennifer Klotz 7/31/2023 2:13 PMOnly a small amount but that’s because I’ve been doing this for a while and they’ve heard my messaging! My biggest hope is to make an impact at work. Not only are things recycled incorrectly, recyclables are placed in the trash :( Ultimately, every zoo is a conservation organization so staff should “walk the walk”. Otherwise we’re hypocrites. Seeing this team step up is giving me faith the new behaviors might stick! -
Jennifer Klotz 7/30/2023 6:11 PMCmon team! We’re in the home stretch with 1 day to go! Will Allyson take it, or maybe Emily has a plan to swoop in from 2nd place? Ultimately there are a number of people who could win. Complete ANY Actions you can, answer reflections questions, post to the Feed. There are ways to get big points! Finish strong y’all-
Emily Slagle 7/30/2023 6:39 PMGoing into this challenge I didn't think I would even clear 200 pts so I'm really proud of my progress. Having this be a team effort definitely helped to support and challenge me to do better. I hope everyone else feels the same way!
Thanks, Jen, for being our captain, showing us how it's done and helping us to keep going!

Jennifer Klotz 7/27/2023 7:28 PMIt was a travel day and I’m happy with my choices. Packed some drinks, an apple, and a box of zoo popcorn for the drive. Dinner was a sandwich wrapped in paper and my own water. I ate the apple later and bought a can of coffee for the morning. In the hotel room I was glad to see refillable bottles of soap and lotion. The surprise was the water glass by the sink- an actual glass! Hopefully the rest of the weekend will stay plastic free! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?
Jennifer Klotz 7/25/2023 5:47 PMOur male cat gets picky at random times and will refuse “old” dry food- it’s like, from yesterday. So I could probably soak it in water and purée with other ingredients from the treat recipes to avoid throwing it out. I’m actually kinda excited about this idea! It drives me nuts when he decides he only wants dry food when fresh from the bin. I hate wasting food and that applies to pet food too!-
Allyson Coleman 7/26/2023 8:29 PMTry adding a little Bone broth! I know each cat is different, but my current cat loves chicken everything. My first cat loved egg, and would eat anything with runny yolk on top, Ravioli is personally offended by egg. I've met very few cats that didn't like the squeeze-ups, so I like to use those as training treats. I bet there's a way to make those at home though!

Jennifer Klotz 7/23/2023 5:37 PMUgh today I literally paid the price for trying to avoid plastic. Having forgotten the paper bakery bag I use for loose bagels, I grabbed a pre labeled bag in the bakery section of the store. The cashier must not have heard me say it had bagels inside because she simply scanned the $5.49 barcode on the label… and not once, but twice! Wait, it gets better. I was packing my reusable bags and when I grabbed the bagels, said something about using a different bag for 3 bagels to avoid plastic. When I saw my receipt at home, there was also a charge for 3 muffins! Therefore, in total I spent $15.50 for 3 bagels!!! Clearly, I’ll be taking that receipt to customer service next time. -

Jennifer Klotz 7/18/2023 6:29 PMToday I engaged in air travel which can be disastrous when trying to stay plastic free!! However, I did it nonetheless. Lunch in the airport was a turkey hoagie (wrapped in paper). No drink because I had my metal water bottle to fill at the fountain. The true test came on the plane. By some miracle I passed on the chance to eat one of my favorite cookies- Biscoff! They're free...but wrapped in plastic so I said NO MA'AM lol Waved off a free drink too since it would be poured into plastic cup. Once in my room and settled, I decided to pop over to Walgreens for some snacks and drinks for my stay. Cans of seltzer- no plastic, check; Pringles- minimal plastic compared to bags of chips, so I was as good as I could get....until they bagged them in plastic!!! I couldn't see the bagging area on their side of the counter and foolishly presumed it was like good ol DE- in a paper bag. The cashier may well have been stabbing me in the heart as he reached across to hand me the bag. I left deflated. I've since learned Wisconsin has laws that prevent localities from enacting bag bans. Whaaat??!! How are we going help this planet people?-

Krystina Jarvis 7/19/2023 8:56 AMUnfortunately there are several cities across the US that have bag ban bans. The fossil fuel and plastics industries have way too much pull (and money to throw at elected officials)...

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
Jennifer Klotz 7/16/2023 4:49 PMThe swap wasn't too difficult because a website I order plastic free items from, like floss, had 2 options. My primary concern was the "sudsing action" of a bar vs. liquid. We have been raised to believe suds = cleanliness but it's not necessarily the case. Surfactants are added to soap products to increase their ability to lather...all as an illusion to consumers. But I was on that bandwagon...and still have a leg on it actually. Suds seems so satisfying it's tough to adjust my perspective. But that's part of this journey!-
Krystina Jarvis 7/16/2023 9:30 PMThe dish soap bar I use is sooo sudsy (with no added surfactants) and it definitely gives me cognitive dissonance sometimes lol I know sudsy doesn't equal cleaner but it's so satisfying still to have it!
