Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.

Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 3 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Bathroom
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.

Alaska Kellum 7/17/2023 3:48 PMIt was really hard to limit my plastic while dealing with illness. Medical related plastic is hard to avoid.-
Ellon Ruschell 7/17/2023 5:59 PMI noticed this a few years ago when my husband was in the hospital. Some I get because it's for sanitation but they gave him SO many plastic spit trays and styrofoam cups. It was unnecessary.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?
Alaska Kellum 7/17/2023 3:47 PMI think often about how owning cats can impact the environment. I already don't let them outside so they don't kill natural wildlife but I want to make caring for them lest wasteful. I started using wheat litter but other things like food and cleaning up after them uses a lot of litter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Alaska Kellum 7/17/2023 3:43 PMI like that I'm not throwing plastic brushes out every few months when the brush wears down. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Alaska Kellum 7/14/2023 1:07 PMI feel better knowing that this litter is not going to end up in my local parks or cause harm to wildlife. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Alaska Kellum 7/14/2023 7:00 AMMy bathroom is not cluttered with bottles and the shampoo/soap bars I buy are locally made. -
Alaska Kellum 7/11/2023 2:13 PMI got a bamboo tooth brush today -
Alaska Kellum 7/05/2023 5:58 AMI used bees wax wraps for my sandwich yesterday instead of plastic wrap.-
