  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
How can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?

    Emily Katzin's avatar
    Emily Katzin 7/28/2023 11:33 AM
I think it is important to share something positive vs. telling people they should do something differently or shaming them, so I try to talk about/advocate for products with less packaging and ways I have found to reduce waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

When I was in high school and college, I had fun making clothes with my mom out of sheets my brothers and I had as kids that had characters from different shows and movies on them. We would cut the characters out and use them as patches on sweatshirts and other clothing.
I also make jewelry and bought earrings that have a loop below the post so that I can add or remove different hanging beads.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Emily Katzin's avatar
    Emily Katzin 7/24/2023 1:27 PM
Community members will often talk to me when I am picking up litter, so it has been a nice way to meet people. I also take pride in keeping my community clean and have gotten to know parts of my community better by walking through them while picking up litter.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

    Emily Katzin's avatar
    Emily Katzin 7/24/2023 1:25 PM
I try to be very conscious about objects that I invite into my life. I have unsubscribed from almost all marketing emails, try to really think about purchases before making them (especially as we are purchasing furniture for our new house), and when it comes to clothing, I'm trying to buy items that will make me more apt to wear clothes I already have that I wear less (e.g. matching sweater for a less-worn top).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

The Sustainability team hosted a beach cleanup at Sims Park on Tuesday and picked up more than 20 lbs of litter. It felt really nice to leave the beach so much cleaner than we found it!

Today, I signed a petition started by the The Alliance for the Great Lakes to encourage Congress to pass legislation that:
    • Makes plastic waste producers responsible for its reduction
    • Reduces the federal government’s use of single-use plastics
    • Funds additional research on the public health impact of plastics
It seems like more and more people I know are developing food sensitivities and digestive issues. I can't help but wonder if it is connected to the increase in microplastics we are ingesting via food and water.

Did you sign it online? If so, any chance you could share a link??
There are no legislations on microplastics in the USA or pretty much anywhere honestly which is highly concerning. We still don't know all the effects that it has, and it very well could be a big factor in the increase of food sensitivities issues that we've seen. Even European countries with much stricter food quality laws have high numbers of people with food sensitivity-- so we know it's not just a USA problem.

In addition to looking for food items with the least amount of packaging, I also try to find items from vendors that don't package in plastic. I've been searching for a long time for organic pumpkin puree to use in smoothies/snacks that is packaged in glass vs. plastic or cans (I think can liner materials bother my system). I finally found a brand called Beech-Nut that packages in glass—but I guess I'll be buying baby food!

I enjoyed handing out reusable bags to visitors at our main campus farmers market this morning to give shoppers an alternative to getting items in plastic bags.

I decided to purchase reusable napkins and opted for linen cloth instead of synthetic fibers. We also recently purchased new bedding and went for a wool duvet with a cotton duvet cover and sheets made from eucalyptus fibers. They are very comfy.
