Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

Recycling rules are so difficult to follow. Watching the video, I realized that I can't crush empty water bottles or recycle shredded paper. It seems like even cardboard should be a certain size. I didn't know! On top of that, my apartment complex recently changed recycling providers (didn't notify people in the complex) and the rules are completely different from the previous provider. This recycling pickup does not accept glass (GLASS!) but does accept certain plastic containers with certain numbers. I now have to throw out glass bottles and it feels so wrong. I think the recycle coach app is a great idea and every facility should have to register with it. People want to do the right thing, but they can't without the right information.
On another note, why is there such wide variability between recycling centers? If things were more uniform, the recycling rules would be easier to follow.

It says it directly on the recycling dumpster, no glass! I know it's so bizarre. It showed me that you can really never assume that certain things are going to be recyclable.

No glass?! Was that info on recycle Coach? Double check with the municipality or facility as I noted some errors on the app for my town.

It is very difficult as it’s not consistent from recycling center to recycling center.

What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

So far, I like using the shampoo bar and soap bar. The shampoo bar especially is kind of fun and novel. I'm still trying to figure out how to store everything separate and to let everything dry between showers. In terms of other personal benefits, I think it's interesting to reflect and think about ways to make your lifestyle more sustainable especially if you don't have to make any sacrifices when making the switch. As I continue to use soap bars, then I'll be able to use a wash cloth instead of a loofah so I won't need to buy plastic loofahs anymore.

What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

There is something comforting about knowing exactly what goes into whatever you are using to clean your home. I'm just hoping that I will be able to find DIY alternatives that work as effectively as purchased products (e.g. does vinegar really kill as much bacteria as a chemical made in a factory?). Right now, my cabinets are filled with all kinds of cleaners we've accumulated over the years. It would be nice to whittle that down to 4-5 ingredients I can use to make cleaners and take up less space!

Today, instead of buying my go-to soft scrub for cleaning the bathroom counter, I used hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and a concentrated biodegradable soap (https://www.goingzerowaste.com/blog/diy-tub-scrub/) and it worked so well! I've tried using diy cleaners before but never with hydrogen peroxide and it really made a difference. I got that sparkle that you get with chemical bleach cleaners. Highly recommend!

I'll look into those recommendations, thanks Victoria! Also if anyone has any suggestions on mirror cleaner, please let me know!

Awesome, thanks for sharing! I use concentrated cleaners from Grove, Blueland and Dropps and add water to the glass spray bottle. I've used baking soda and coconut oil to take sticky labels off bottles, never thought about adding hydrogen peroxide/soap to make a cleaner. Will try it out!

I have to be honest...I wasn't looking forward to taking on this plastic free challenge. Plastic is so convenient and ubiquitous...the idea of curtailing plastic use seemed like such a burden. But I have to say that so far I'm actually enjoying it! I forgot that there are actually easy ways to use less plastic by being more conscious when choosing personal care and home care products. It makes me think about how much money, energy, and plastic is wasted transporting and packaging laundry detergent, cleaners, shampoo, conditioner, & body wash when all of these products are mostly water. If stores just sold concentrate, a lot of people could just add water at home. Simply by switching bar soap for body wash or a shampoo bar for liquid shampoo, I can cut down on plastic use. I also never knew that dryer sheets aren't that great for your clothing or appliances. It's rare that there can be win-wins when it comes to being more sustainable (and I'm still day 3 of using these products so we'll see how it goes), but I definitely feel more educated and optimistic that using less plastic may be a lot easier than I thought.
