Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 10 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Bathroom
See the Green
I will recycle used contact lenses and packaging.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 1 friends, family, and/or colleagues.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Madison Jones 7/28/2023 11:19 AMUnfortunately my rental house has terrible energy efficiency and there is not much I can do that. This encourages me to make a better investment for my next rental. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Madison Jones 7/25/2023 4:40 PMIt reaffirms that most things out there are just marketing ploys designed to get humans to want them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Madison Jones 7/18/2023 5:01 PMMy bamboo toothbrush is compostable, so I can compost it at the recommended time instead of using a plastic one for 'too long' to keep it out of the landfill. Whenever I go to the dentist I say no to their plastic toothbrush and ask if they would consider providing bamboo toothbrushes -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Madison Jones 7/18/2023 4:50 PMI learned that a lot of food containers don't need to be 100% clean, just mostly clean. My city actually says not to waste water on cleaning effort. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Madison Jones 7/14/2023 12:04 PMMy problem here is forgetting to have reusable bags in the car. Since I have too many reusable bags anyways, I am trying to make some my designated leave-in-the-car bags -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomTake a moment to estimate how many disposable daily contacts you may have used over the years. What would be your impact now of switching to a contact brand with a longer lifespan?
Madison Jones 7/14/2023 11:15 AMToo many... had contacts for 16 years. I have kept bimonthly contacts but might have to switch to daily for medical reasons - but knowing I can recycle them makes me feel better about this change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBeyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?
Madison Jones 7/14/2023 11:12 AMIts faster! throwing everything either together or straight from the fridge into my bag makes my morning smoother. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Madison Jones 7/07/2023 6:19 PMClothing swaps and secondhand shopping, and making sure I do the same with my own clothes. Trying not to follow trends but picking pieces I love on their own. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Madison Jones 7/06/2023 1:16 PM"A balloon release is a sort of accepted form of littering." Truly an example of us enjoying something for 5 minutes and releasing it into the environment to be someone else's and/or an animal's problem. I will share the story of the 1986 Cleveland balloon release disaster with friends and family.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Madison Jones 7/06/2023 12:26 PMSince a lot of coffee shops don't allow you to bring your own mug anymore, and since I have a coffee maker at home, every work day I make my own coffee with my own mug (saves money and plastic). I will maintain my coffee maker and change up my coffee grounds so I stay interested.
