Beyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?

I've been saving money on sandwich baggies and snack baggies by just using old chinese food containers as my reusable containers for my lunches.

Were you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?

I knew there were different types of plastics, but I didn't realize just how difficult it was to recycle some of them. When I was trying to figure out what types/numbers I was able to recycle in my county and neighborhood, I was having some trouble getting definitive answers. I was only seeing "we can take these items." I was hoping for some better information to be available on my county's website so I could give my roommates the information and improve our recycling habits. The best I got was that my roommate could not put grocery bags in the recycling (which I'd already told him, but he didn't believe me).

    Kitchen
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

My roommates and I will order Chinese food every once in a while and reuse those plastic containers as food storage. When they start to get really old and warped from the microwave, we recycle them appropriately and prepare for the next Chinese food night.

I love reusing the boxes, too! Sometimes they're surprisingly good quality and last a long time.

    Bathroom
Disposable tampons and menstrual pads are often quite expensive. What are the economic and personal benefits of this switch for you?

A little tmi for some folks, so my apologies to everyone that reads this, feel free to skip over it.

As a nonbinary person, I've always hated having to go buy tampons or asking someone if they have one to give me. I tend to be really self-conscious about it and it just adds to the gender dysphoria I feel during that week. Switching over to something that was reusable has helped tremendously, not only with minimizing my waste, but with saving some money and with avoiding those awkward trips down the tampon aisle at the grocery store.

I was glad to see that the ecochallenge included this topic, because we need to be having conversations about all areas where we can work for sustainability. I admire you for addressing the issue and salute your courage and openness.

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

There are a few people that walk around my neighborhood with trash bags and grabbers, picking up litter that they see. I'll be joining them on Sunday mornings now to do my part in keeping my community trash-free!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

Growing mint outside of my kitchen window has reduced the presence of ants in my kitchen, and I don't have to spray the counters down with mint spray anymore.
