Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.

Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Kitchen
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Bathroom
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.

Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Natalie Janke 7/31/2023 5:24 AMGardening helps in several ways: can attract pollinators, positive impact on mental health, and the satisfaction of watching something you worked hard on grow. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Natalie Janke 7/31/2023 5:19 AMNatural fibers break down over time if disposed of properly (outside of plastic bags). They should hopefully release less harmful chemicals while breaking down as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Natalie Janke 7/31/2023 5:18 AMeconomic benefits: you should be paying for less due to less packaging, as the company is not wasting money on it. Personal benefit is that you are not creating additional, unnecessary trash. Bars are also more portable and easy to take on trips so no need to buy travel size. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Natalie Janke 7/31/2023 5:16 AMMy thoughts are eco friendly packaging and recycling opportunities may not be available in all communities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
Natalie Janke 7/31/2023 5:14 AMShare this knowledge with others who may not be aware, and advocate for reusable water bottles. -
Natalie Janke 7/28/2023 11:40 AMI have been more aware of how often I use refillable water bottles and mugs. I also look for more sustainable packaging while grocery shopping. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomDo some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?
Natalie Janke 7/28/2023 10:49 AMAs a breast cancer survivor, I researched and decided to switch to a natural deodorant. It is also a refillable kind where the cartridges are almost zero waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Natalie Janke 7/28/2023 10:46 AMI use a refillable razor to minimize plastic waste from disposable handles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Natalie Janke 7/28/2023 10:46 AMI use a shampoo bar and conditioner and it cuts down on plastic waste. Easy to travel with as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
